Do what the others are suggesting: take the funicular up the hill, absorb the beautiful church, and walk across to the Roman amphitheater(s), A great way to spend a morning.

Take the funicular from the old city. Visit this and check out the ceiling. Fantastic view of Lyon. Combine with the Roman ruins and adjacent museum of Roman antiquities.

Situated right at the very top of Fourviere Hill in the heart of Old Roman Lyon. what a magnificent beautiful building and setting. Apparently it is situated on what was once the Roman forum of Trajan. Not so much if these walls could speak but if the hill itself could speak - history here is just seeping out of the... More

Using a full day Metro ticket allowed us to also go up the funicular to see this wonderful building and take a view over the city of Lyon.

There are plenty of parts to this C19th edifice, including a complete lower chapel. The main church is one of the most striking examples of C19th church decoration I've ever seen. I was simply struck speechless by it. Whatever else you do in Lyon, this one has to be seen.

In a lovely location with sensational views of Lyon, this is a must see cathedral. It is extremely beautiful, with lovely gold leaf and mosaics. It is within walking distance of the roman amphitheatres in Lyon, so do both on the same funicular ticket one way for Euro1.70. You can walk back down very easily to the old town, by... More

This basilica is a monument to 19 cent neo-byzantine architecture with the walls covered in mosaics, the twin column supports for the roof almost on the limit of the static calculations and a position above the city which enables one to see the places one has visited in the trip to the city.

The basilica sits atop of a hill overlooking Lyon. Its exterior and style are very unique. The main part of the basilica is ornate like other cathedrals; the mosaic works on the side are exquisite. One thing that sets this place apart, is the large crypt downstairs that has portraits and statutes of the Madonna from all over the world.

Worth a steep walk or ride on the funicular to visit this late 19th C confection. Fabulous views of the city from the view point at the back of the Basilica.
