and it was really a surprise...lively town...rich in history....you can enjoy a boat ride along the river to get a first glimpse of the city, then, you just have to let yourself wander the old town with its cobbled streets, lovely squares and traboules(passageways)....go up to the basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière to have a great view of the city...and... we had a guided tour of old Lyon and it was great. We were not aware that the city had so much amazing history. The murs peints and the traboules were particularly interesting and the two sights I think you definitely have to see.

A wonderful day in Lyon could include a walk through the streets of old Lyon, peeking into the courtyards that are open to the public and visiting a couple of churches, and then taking the funicular up the Fouviere hill to visit the church, and then walking down through gardens and visiting two roman theatres ending back up at the... Such a great place to visit. In the US there are never places with so much history. enjoy walking around after taking the funicular to the Basilica. Then find a nice place at a sidewalk café to people watch and share a bottle of wine and snacks.

Most places in Lyon are closed on Sundays but you will find lots to see and do in the old town. Restaurants are ready to serve and there will always be great people watching. Boutiques and specialty shops are open and the proprietors are always happy to help. The streets are cobblestoned and you need a good pair of comfortable... More

Bouchon restaurants are where tourists and locals flock to at dinner time in this old city. Shawarma in pita pockets is a regular staple, too, along with numerous shops that sell glacé! There is the Fourviere and Cathedral St. Jean for the religious and architecture enthusiasts...for the rest of us, there are so many quaint little stores where you can... More

...as these places always are, so no offense. Mostly renaissance houses, small alleys, sweet little shops and restaurants, overall a place to see when you're in the area!

If you love Parisian architecture, history and atmosphere you will simply love Lyon. With the superbly comfortable TGV departing from Gare Du Nord in Paris, it's a quick 2 hour journey to the heart of Lyon, Gare Part-Dieu. Quieter, cleaner and with nicer locals, Lyon offers a superb visit steeped in history. Getting to the old (Vieux) Lyon is easy.... More

The easy access makes this a fun place to go at various times of the day, including after dinner. Absence of huge crowd is a plus, otherwise it takes away the quaint atmosphere. Traboules , while can be overkill if one takes an immersion tour just in it, represent a part of lyon history. The funicular that goes up the... More
