What's not to like. Fabulous old town the gastronomic centre of France with e most wonderful selection of restaurants. Traditional French cuisine, lots of outside eating, creperies, welcoming restaurant owners, friendly. The Basilique is beautiful. The Museum of Miniatures is a nice way to spend an hour or so, very different from anything you will see anywhere else. A short... More

We visit Lyon annually to see our daughter and always make a point to wander the streets of "old Lyon". Yes, at one level it can be viewed as a "semi-tacky tourist area" but it is more. The architecture, the taboules, the history, the traditional bouchon restaurants, etc. really allow one to experience a medieval town. Taking the time to... More

It's small streets, beautiful buildings, great architecture, small shops, boutiques, restos, wine cellars, city squares, churches. All of this is next to the river, there are many green spaces. It's a great walk.

We stayed here during our visit. Lovely to walk around with many restaurants and an energetic walk up to the Basilica.

It has several blocks of fully intact, still lived-in, 16th adn 17th century mansions. The internal passageways, stairways, and courtyards are one-of-a-kind.

The area is obviouly important to the local crowd, which is understandable for a large sity like Lyon, it is is no tourist attraction. There are a few nice old buildings.

Vieux Lyon is as harmonious an area as I can remember, in terms of the number of old buildings left, still intact, and indeed still functioning. You can often go inside and see lovely courtyards, as well as admiring the facades, and also go along narrow passageways to the next street.

One of the most charming towns that we have visited. Walk through the main streets that run parallel to the river or duck through the traboules (secret twisting alleyways that run between the buildings). There are quaint shops, excellent bars, cafes and many reasonable, simple but very good 'bouchon' restaurants. The Basilica (on the hill) is well worth a visit... More

This is the requisite semi-tacky tourist zone that you find in most European cities. Lots of junk souvenir shops scattered amount the art galleries and eateries. The highly vaunted traboules are just alleys. Though I'm a history buff, failed to see the fascination about them. Yes, the streets have some old world charm. But this ain't no Venice.

We purchased a three day Lyon City Card which included a guided tour of Vieux Lyon booked for us at the Tourist Office. It was a great tour giving us loads of information about the history of Vieux Lyon, the architecture and renovations of the buildings and sites by the City Council. The tour commenced at the Cathedral of St... More
