We were very disappointed today as we arrived walking from the city centre, just to look upon a closed gate with little information, and a totally covered cathedral.

The St Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral, is a Russian Orthodox cathedral of the Moscow Patriarchate, the legal property of the Russian Federation administered by the Property Department of the Moscow Kremlin and a national monument of France, located in the city of Nice. Opened in 1912, thanks to the generosity of Russia's Tsar Nicholas II, it is the largest Russian Orthodox... More

Amazing church, the largest Russian Orthodox cathedral in Western Europe. Best to go there on the hop-on hop-off bus. Be aware: it's closed from 12-2 for lunch. Worth the visit. The icons are fantastic.

We had seen this wonderful church at a distance many years ago - and were so looking forward to properly exploring it on this visit. We made a special time to see it - and it is TOTALLY covered in scaffolding and protective fabric. There seems to be some roofing problems apparently, but the notice outside in French did not... It took us awhile to walk to the cathedral only to be disappointed to learn that it was closed for renovation.

Arrived and initially able to enjoy the beauty and atmosphere. Pleased to respect the request for quiet and appreciated the opportunity to enjoy the ornate decoration. However, I was soon ashamed to be British when a coach load of noisy people seemed unable not to chatter and complain about the admission charge.

Very disappointing there was scaffolding around the whole building and this was then clad in tarpaulin so we did not even get to see the outside of the building and the gates were locked.

This wonderful cathedral is worth a visit but not at the moment where it is covered in scaffolding and tarpaulin. It is largely also not possible to go inside the building. On a hot day it would be a shame to trudge all the way there, only to be disappointed, like we were.

The cathedral is currently closed for restoration (July 2014) and the entire building is covered in scaffolding and protective tarpaulins, so you can not even photograph the outside..

We went there I believe on the 23rd of June and it was closed for renovations. You can't see anything of the architecture. Did not seen any notice of it online, should have read some of the comments here... I guess I will have to go to Moscow.
