Along with the Place Pie and Place du Palais, this is the heart of the city. There are tons of cafes and bars, and the shops are just off to the side (down the steep hill). We found this to be the best of the three squares, as it has more restaurants than Place du Palais but isn't as rowdy as... More

A nice square with lots of cafés to sit and watch the world go by. Close to Palais des Papes and Pont D'Avignon. We had coffee and cake in a lovely salon du thé at one end of the square. Hotel de vile takes pride of place.

Located just in the heart of the city, where is located the town hall and a lot of restaurants and bars, and at the same time just to 2-3 min away from the Palais des Papes, the most important monument at Avignon. All restaurants have some nice terraces, where you can have some drinks and good breakfasts in the morning... More

Lovely place to sit, walk around. Plenty or restaurants to choose from. Enjoy . Very near the Palace des papes. There is a most beautiful carousel in the enter of the place.

This plaza is in the heart of the old city, within easy walking distance of all the main sites. Its periodic markets are a delight. The restaurants around it better than Rick Steves would lead one to expect. The carousel and street performers add special life to the scene.

Lovely square to sit and sip a glass of wine for as long as you want. Lots going on. We did not eat on the square but OFF. There are so many places to choose from, that don't have pictures or aren't in English if that is a concern. We happened to be there in Nov. with perfect weather!

Great place to people watch. The Forum Restaurant is good. It is at the top of the main shopping street and you seem to go though there often for the attractions.

With restaurants and shops, as well as a number of attractions nearby, the Place de l'Horloge is certainly the heart of old Avignon. It can get uncomfortably crowded at times, but that may just be because I visited during the school holidays. Some of the restaurants serve typical tourist grub, but there are some real gems tucked away. It's also... More

This seems to be an area for locals and tourists. We had our first lunch of regional food and wine and sat for hours. Many wonderful outdoor cafés to choose from and a sunny October day!
