Like Café Van Gogh at Arles’ Place du Forum and St. Paul de Mausolee in Saint-Remy-de-Provence, Espace Van Gogh is a pilgrimage destination for us avid fans of Van Gogh’s works. After touring the premises, my wife and I waited our turn to stand in the best place in the courtyard to have an album-worthy picture taken.

We visited accompanied by an English speaking guide. She told us that Van Gogh spent time here in hospital in the winter of 1888/89. Whilst here he painted the central garden, which did not seem to have altered much since he was a patient. The gardens are well kept. There is a small gift shop selling postcards and prints of... I have been an admirer of Van Gogh for a long time. I was thrilled to be able to stand in the garden he did a painting of and to be on the grounds of the hospital looking just as it did when he did a painting of it.

We were kind of disappointed with the place because it doesn't really tell you much about the artists life in Arles but just shows you the place and presents a plaque with a poster of the painting.

It is interesting to see places that Van Gogh painted and what they look like today. The flowers are quite nice here, although the fountain wasn't working. The shops have souvenirs and reproductions of Van Gogh's work. I suppose it's a use for a former Asylum and possibly helps toward the upkeep of the flowers.

There is a bit of information to help you picture Van Gogh's painting, but mostly enjoy this courtyard as a green space and retreat in lovely Arles. There is a cafe here that we enjoyed, and there are plenty of shops and cafes in the surrounding pedestrian streets.

In visiting this very well set-up site, one can get some feeling for the views, colors, etc., than Van Gogh himself saw. The architecture and the vegetation will seem very familiar, and there are "reproductions" (large posters, really) of some of his works set up in various places along the way. We found this a very enjoyable experience and were... More

Arles was very small but also busy with crowd. This place somehow gave me peace. Recommend to go there afternoon about 5-6pm, when is less busy more peace.

We stumbled upon this cute little place around lunch time (mid-afternoon)... only to find that they were only serving crepes. I had a crepe with a sweet chestnut cream inside. It was lovely with a cup of tea.
