Cézanne's mountain

The mountain is a 20-30 minute drive from la Bruissanne , our B&B in Aix. Go in the late afternoon when the light on the mountain is changing. Lots of opportunities for hiking.

A coach trip into the hills was a bonus. Out standing views and the good fortune to have a driver who knew the area and who shared that knowledge at every twist and turn. The visitor centre was in the process of changing the exhibition so not much to see. I have no doubt when arrangements are complete one will... More

Since I've lived here for a few years I have been to the top of St Victoire by the cross several times.Staring at Barrage du Bimont or at Refuge Cezanne Always a really rewarding walk. You get a great workout and the best views. Be sure to have shoes for walking in rocky, slippery terrain and enough water. Driving around... More

A very nice hike up the mountain ( it took us only one hour to reach the summit), and a breathtaking view from the top. Lots of free parking lots along the road in the valley.

It's like a 30 mins drive top from Aix-en-Provence. I suppose if you prefer you may want to ride the way. So many places to pull over and appreciate the place by car as well though. As many helpfully mentioned, just set your GPS to the nearest town called Vauvenargues. No rush and be ready to pull over so that... More

It's well worth the drive (on the sometimes very bendy road) right round the mountain. Also, do stop to take in the Barage du Bimont with its glittering turquoise reservoir.

Must see the unusual facets of the mountain to then look back at the way Cezanne, with his varied shapes and colors, captured them. Makes one appreciate the artistry of Cezanne.

Mont Sainte Victorie is a short drive (30 min) from Aix and feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of town. There are many parking areas and some picnic tables near the hiking trails. I didn't see any toilets. My husband and I hiked the Cézanne's Refuge trail. It was a modestly steep trail, with some shaded and... More

Mt. St. Victoire is a lovely drive which takes only an hour or so from point of departure to return. It is easy to leave Aix, just follow the signs to Vauvenargues and continue on along the road which goes circles the entire mountain. It is a pleasure to compare the different type of terrior. The north side provides a... More

If you know Cezanne then you know this mountain. I would have liked to have gotten a lot closer than I did. Kind of hard to feel the impact from where I was but still glad to have had the chance to imagine the maestro at his easel.
