Mont Sainte Victoire dominates the landscape as one approaches Aix, and welcomes me as I return to Aix after an absence of months or years. I have climbed it, photographed it, and dined in its shadow, most recently just last month.

1. Take water. Take more water than you think you will need. There is no drinkable water on the mountain. The last couple of hours were awful. 2. Don't believe the people who run up and down like mountain goats in a couple of hours. There is a lot of loose, rocky ground. Plan to spend 3-5 hours walking. 3.... More

I had wonderful few hours hiking in the hills of the nature preserve there; however, in the summer when fires can be a problem, some of the trails from Le Tholonet are closed later in the day. Since I took the bus to there and discovered that the nearest trail closed at 11:00 a.m., I ended up walking 1.5 km... More

We enjoyed the promenade around the park national crossing the dam de Bimont. We 'ont manqué le courage' to climb the mountain because of the heat but apparently it is well worth doing and I can believe the views from the top are well worth it. Newly introduced to the art of Cezanne the views of the mountain that occupied... More

When I went to la Sainte Victoire I was ill and a miracle happened...I came back to life totally invigorated. A complete turn around. I am not kidding. I could feel as if energy was coming from the mountain to me ! This mountain is way taller than I thought...it is impressive, just behind Aix en Provence, it seems to... More

Tough but rewarding stomp up to the peak of Ste Victoire in a couple of hours - go early! It would be challenging to ascend in the heat and very little shade on the descent after about 10. Gorgeous views at the top and a small disused priory a few steps from the peak makes for a good lunch spot.... More

A tough climb but even if you only make it to the first ridge you have excellent views of the lake below and far into the distance. There are many approaches to the mountain but I think parking near the damn is the best

The mountain is a 20-30 minute drive from la Bruissanne , our B&B in Aix. Go in the late afternoon when the light on the mountain is changing. Lots of opportunities for hiking.
