La montage Sainte Victoire near Aix en Provence is a most famous and very beautiful hill, about 1 000 m high, that inspired many famous painters, in particular Paul Cézanne. Climbing to the top is possible from Vauvenargues in the North, Barrage de Bimont in the West, both shallow climbing, or by the South side, a bit steeper but most... More

If you spend any time in Provence make sure you put a day aside to do this. Can be a tough walk depending on your starting point but our 6 year old boy made it with some encouragement without being carried. View from the top is priceless. Take a picnic.

We took public transportation and got off at the dam (i forget it's name). It's a huge dam with turquoise water in the middle of the nature. Very impressive. While hiking up the mountain, I was struck by the fragrances wafting up from the hot dry earth: wild rosemary, sage, pine and hot mineral fragrances mixing together to create a... More

What follows are accurate (as of June 2, 2014) directions to the trail head to the monastery and cross, from center city Aix-en-Provence. Note: several people have listed directions here that are not completely correct and no one at the tourism center can tell you accurately either; benefit from my detective work and mistakes. Start at main bus station at... More

The mountain, and it's surroundings are absolutely lovely. If you have a car, it's really worth the 30minute drive outside town to see it up close. And if you're lucky and properly prepared, maybe you'll figure out how to find a trail to go on a hike - I wasn't. The good news is that there are plenty of little... More

Sainte Victoire is worth every drop of sweat it takes to get to the top. I will get the best view of Provence possible. It takes roughly 2 hours to get up to the monastery and another 15 minutes all the way to the cross. If you stay in Aix, you can take bus L140. It takes extra 25 minutes... More

Really deserves one day of your trip. Plan in advance in order to know exactly where to go because it's not always clear how to reach the parking spots and the road signs are not exactly helpful. But it's really beautiful and the trails are well kept.

I sugget to buy an IGN MAP and follow paths around the St Victoire. Mountain biking is great, take care as summer imposes restricted hours whrn the win is blowing. Best is early in the morning.
