As others have said, it needs a lift. That being said, it's an ok small museum concentrating on La Rochelle. There are lots of old views of the city and surrounding area.

Lovely little museum with a fine exhibition at the moment on La Femme - plus painting by the local painter, Fromentin. Certainly worth a visit but don't bother if you can't do stairs - two flights up an ancient staircase and no lift for those who are physically unable to climb.

Excellent permanent displays in very large villa in town centre. Very interesting collection related to the slave trade and wonderful temporary B & W photographic exhibition of portraits of people from around the world

A party of seven with our painting teacher travelled more than 100 kms today (saturday 16 june 2012) only to find the museum was closed for renovation. Very disappointed that this was not announced on any of the tourist sites for the area

The Musée des Beaux-Arts occupies I single floor in what I believe to be an old episcopal palace. In addition to other odds and ends, they have large collections of the works of Fromentin and Bouguereau, both local boys.
