Very nice esplanade, open space surrounded by boats, aquarium, coffee shops/restaurants Brasserie. You will see lots of Red Cedar houses which hosts restaurants/coffee shops and the Tourist Office.

Definitely the least good part of the port area. Cafes much more fast food rather than quality. Shabby compared with the other side of the port

La Rochelle is wonderful - truly the "most attractive and unspoilt seaside town in France" (to quote the Rough Guide) but after you've explored the harbourside, old town, parcs, beaches etc the Gabut makes an interesting change. A much calmer quarter than the main Vieux Port, a brilliant place to spend a morning with a coffee and a crepe in one of the port-side restaurants or cafes and watch the ships, boats and yachts go by.
