The buildings are nice, the shops look fun, the restaurants taste good, though you can't get any food before 7pm. But there are way too many people! We went there on Friday and it was hell. Then we came back on Wednesday and it was a bit better.

An old port, with plenty to do, commercial, traditional, museums, boats, boat-trips, landmarks, restaurants it has it all! Yes it is commercialised, but what old historic port isn't! Forget the crappy bits and enjoy, sit there and take in the sites and people watch over a cold beer or wine!!!

Old port, schmoll port. We were not that impressed. The old port, to us, seemed to be over crowded, over commercialized, and under whelming. Don't get me wrong, the town is stunning, historic and we had a lovely two days there - but the old port was not the highlight.

The "vieux port" is definitely wortha look and if you're in La Rochelle, it'll be hard for yout o miss it! There's a flurry of bars and restaurants around the length of it and some nice terasses to grab a cool drink. I found it a bit busy though (mind you, that was in mid july) All in all lovely

Loved the busy atmosphere in high season. Lots of street entertainers, even watched couples doing salsa dancing outside mercure hotel in the square- fabulous! Craft stalls as well as an excellent selection of places to eat and have drinks. Beautiful harbour views but do visit Rue St Jean du Perot where there's an amazing selection of excellent restaurants and a... More

Well worth wandering around the old port and town. Lots going on and plenty of street stalls and street entertainers. Avoid the row of restaurants overlooking the port on your right as you face the sea as they all sell the same stuff as each other mainly pizzas. Walk a bit further down the side streets and find somewhere better... More

A beautiful historic port, with a vast selection of fish restaurants. This place is one of the biggest marinas in the world, so if you are a boat spotter, then you're quids in. Boat trips are on offer to the local sites, but enjoy these for the sea experience and sight-seeing, as opposed to walk around viewing. A lively port... More
