With all the boats and the old harbour it is hard not to reach for your camera again and again. La Rochelle is certainly worth a visit.

This is a place to head for, where the port inches into the centre of town and a big tide brings the yacht masts up to street level. It's very old and unspoiled, just a delight to stroll around in. Lots of history all around you, domestic and international, of royalty, and of trade and of the working man.

La Rochelle is an ancient city, but in the manner of many European cities, it is still vibrantly alive, even in the oldest sections. We visited the Maritime Museum area (the main exhibits are closed from the end of October, OPPS) and the inner and outer harbor areas, and the three towers. The Tower St Nicholas has a very interesting... More

it is only 15 minutes walk from La Rochelle main station (you can access this city by TGV or TER). It is quiet near from the city to the port, and the view is amazing. You could see the port, the ships all the way around. Many souvenir shops, restaurants, bars, and many other fashion shops are available around the... More

I highly recommend a weekend here or longer; theres a beach ; boat trips; a lovely port ; fabulous buildings and cobbled streets full of great restuarants and bars.... More

The harbour guarded by the old twin towers is a beautiful sight on a fine day. Popular with tourists who enjoy walking all the way around the extensive harbour. Ferries and tourist boats to the various island and forts along the coast.

There is so much to do and see like impromptu little shows and nice shops that an afternoon passes very quickly. It's also possible to climb up to the top of the tower from where you get an amazing view of La Rochelle.

If you're in the area then it's worth searching out for a spot of lunch. I wouldn't consider it a 'destination' in itself but worth a visit if you're in La Rochelle anyway.
