A sense of calm when you enter. Huge flag stones that millions have walked over the centuries, towering arches, stained glass windows., as in many cathedrals of this era. This was Monet's church. From the first floor of the tourist office opposite, Monet painted his series of paintings of the church during the different seasons.

The guide described the evolving gothic architecture as it changed from the 13th century through the ages. Notice the top middle statues with no heads. This happened during the 100 year war when Protestants tried to topple the statue but only the head fell. The church was closed on day we toured but walked all around and enjoyed.

It doesn't open until 12 on Mondays which I didn't know until I was there. I couldn't wait that long so I had to come back at 9am three days later on my way to the airport! SO worth it though!!!!

Whenever we come to see the cathedral it is being rennovated and not photogenic. You should be sure to leavew time for the old town and the Jean d'Arc church nearby.

A very impressive edifice in a superb medieval town. Particularly impressed by the beautiful stained glass windows.

Quite impressive but currently under repair and not as quirkily interesting as Chartres not so far away. While contemplating the intricately carved exterior masonry detailing and simply gargantuan proportions of this structure which dominates the skyline of Rouen, the thought occurred whether ts original purpose was more for the glorification of the omnipotent or the status of its funders? After... More

Beautiful cathedral inside and out, as many of the other reviews state. The focus of this review is the experience we had outside the cathedral. There were summer concerts taking place all over Rouen while we were there. We saw a French rap band called Def while we enjoyed a bottle of wine outside on a patio. Great band! There... More

I took day trip From Paris to Rouen. My reasons? Two: the cathedral that Monet painted again and again, and Jeanne d'Arc, aka Joan of Arc. In the cathedral I wasn't disappointed...well, slightly, but only because the cathedral's west front was being restored. If you know Monet's paintings - of the west front in different times of day - you... More

I enjoyed visiting the Notre-Dame cathedral in Rouen recently. The architectural features are exposed more than some of the historical churches I've visited, because many of the cloth tapestries and hangings that would have been there in the past are no longer up. Some cathedrals around the world try to replicate the look that would have existed in the past... More
