The cathedral of Notre-Dame in Bayeux is an impressive building, a mix of Romanesque in the 11th century crypt and glorious Gothic in the 13th-century nave. In the 11th century after the Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066, ties with England were strong. You'll see a reference to the turbulent past above the south transept portal where sculpted scenes show the life of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury who was assassinated in Canterbury Cathedral on the orders of King Henry II of England. The Bayeux Tapestry was kept here from the 11th to the 18th centuries, probably displayed for the first time on the day the cathedral was consecrated in 1077 in the presence of William the Conqueror.

Bayeux Notre Dame Cathedral

Stunning piece of architecture ............inside is wonderful but needs to been seen from the outside at night as the building is lit up by coloured lights and looks amazing

This is a large cathedral for the size of the town. Sit on the benches outside and marvel at all the details and the sheer scale. Look closer and you can see the different styles added over the centuries. It's a quiet location outside so you can just enjoy the view. It's free to go in and is tranquil and... More

We were gonna skip Bayeux all together on our camper van trip but decided we needed a coffee and thought we would have a quick walk around. You cannot miss this cathedral it is magnificent such history, such ornate beauty such a breath grasping place in reverence to God. An absolute must in Bayeux

What a wonderful, Gothic designed church, it is really a masterpiece in architecture, they do build them big in Europe and this one is no exception. Australians fought for Bayeux during the Second World War, as did a lot of the Allied Forces, but it was very moving to see, on the day that we visited this Cathedral, wreaths of... More

Most beautiful cathedral with exquisite stained glass and I highly recommend you see this church at night. Every night they turn the lights on--purples and blues. The Tree of Liberty light show is NOT every night and we missed that. See YouTube for several different videos.

This is one of the most beautiful catherdrals I have visited. The atmosphere oozes tranquility and peace. The history is superb a must visit in Bayeux. There is no fee to enter.

Beautiful, soaring ceiling, with sweeping arches and largely unadorned walls. This cathedral dates to the year 1077 and was used to display the Bayeux tapestry, hanging it along the inner columns on one side, continuing across the altar and returning along the columns on the other side. Nearby the Tapestry Museum, it's a short walk and well worth a visit.
