The cathedral of Notre-Dame in Bayeux is an impressive building, a mix of Romanesque in the 11th century crypt and glorious Gothic in the 13th-century nave. In the 11th century after the Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066, ties with England were strong. You'll see a reference to the turbulent past above the south transept portal where sculpted scenes show the life of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury who was assassinated in Canterbury Cathedral on the orders of King Henry II of England. The Bayeux Tapestry was kept here from the 11th to the 18th centuries, probably displayed for the first time on the day the cathedral was consecrated in 1077 in the presence of William the Conqueror.

The Bayeux Cathedral is smaller than many french cathedrals, but it has beatiful details and interesting stained glass windows. If you are in the city to visit the tapestries, be sure to pay the cathedral a visit too.

Wow!! What a stunning building..I usually find church visits boring and don't bother but this one is just simply stunning, from the beautiful catacombs to the stained glass windows, it's just a beautiful building. Catch the train to the museum and tour of the city outside aswell which is very handy 👍

I visited the church just as it rained, the cathedral itself is very impressive and certainly a landmark at Bayeux. The Church has a long standing history in Bayeux with many fascinating pieces of history you can find out about. Architecturally its a very beautiful building and I would recommend this as a must see if your in Bayeux for... More

This is a beautiful cathedral that dominates the landscape, not just another church, so worth a look, the crypt dates back to the Romans.

We didn't know about the free walking tour. We happened to walk over by the cathedral and decided to go in. What a beautiful church! There were not many people there. We felt like we had the entire cathedral to ourselves. What an awe-inspiring place. I'm so glad that we were able to see it.

The church is beautiful and we enjoyed it outside our hotel window. We spent much time just sitting outside and enjoying its beauty. I made sure I was there on the hour to record the sounds of the bells still playing Christmas music. We enjoyed the inside and outside of this 1000 year old treasure!

This was an unexpectedly beautiful cathedral located in the heart of Bayeux. The interior of the cathedral was very similar to the larger Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. In the evening, the cathedral is nicely illuminated and is visible from many parts of town. If you are in Bayuex, it's well worth a visit.
