In the 11th century after the Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066, ties with England were strong. You'll see a reference to the turbulent past above the south transept portal where sculpted scenes show the life of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury who was assassinated in Canterbury Cathedral on the orders of King Henry II of England. The Bayeux Tapestry was kept here from the 11th to the 18th centuries, probably displayed for the first time on the day the cathedral was consecrated in 1077 in the presence of William the Conqueror. « less

A very elaborate interior with lots to see and a crypt that is also worth visiting. There are several multi lingual signs around the interior explaining various points.

You see a lot of these in France, but this is a nice example of the genre, with multiple, beautiful views of the flying buttresses from within. Plus, the walk to and from the building takes you through a myriad of lovely streets. If you're planning a battlefield tour, arrive early the day before and stroll around, taking in the... More

A beautiful cathedral, with an outside light show at certain times of the year. You don't have to be religious to appreciate the tranquillity of the building, or be impressed with the architecture. The chapel of St Therese is lovely, as is her family history.

A beautiful Cathedral on the inside, imposing on the outside. Well worth visiting if you are in the area. Free to enter and right next to the Musee Baron Gerard and around the corner from the Tapestry museum, it is easy to include this on your list when you are in the city.

The Cathedral of Bayeux is simple amazing. You would not expect to see this in such a small town like Bayeux. I highly recommend it.

We stumble upon the cathedrale one evening while strolling after dinner. It just so happened that they had students on hand who were giving free tours of the cathedrale. The students were extremely knowledgeable about it's history and showed us the entire inside. It truly was a beautiful place.
