In the 11th century after the Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066, ties with England were strong. You'll see a reference to the turbulent past above the south transept portal where sculpted scenes show the life of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury who was assassinated in Canterbury Cathedral on the orders of King Henry II of England. The Bayeux Tapestry was kept here from the 11th to the 18th centuries, probably displayed for the first time on the day the cathedral was consecrated in 1077 in the presence of William the Conqueror. « less

Set proud uncluttered by surrounding buildings the cathedral dominates both the skyline and the town of Bayeux. It carries its long history lightly at the centre of two of the greatest invasions in British History. Light and airy with beautiful stain glass which illuminates rather than darkens. Full of interesting objects a modern pilgrimage site for both sides of the... More

Pretty impressive cathedral! Bayeux is a very pretty city and is helped by this church. Make sure you go to one of the outdoor cafes near by.

You go to a lot of cathedrals when driving round France, but this one is particularly beautiful. Perhaps it's the absence of buildings close to the church or the lovely setting of the town, but its unmissable.

You can't miss this beautiful cathedral in Bayeux. It stands out from wherever you are. It survived the WWII attacks, so it is the original construction. An amazing building from the outside and a peaceful church once you are inside. We had the fortune to attend mass on Sunday, which topped of our experience in Bayeux and it's amazing cathedral.

My wife and I were there just after the 70th Anniversary of D-Day. The Cathedral, Tapestry, American Cemetery, and Omaha Beach are must sees. The Cathedral was lit at night and I happened by both it and the Freedom Wall and adjacent tree lit up with blue lighting. The music being played was "We Shall Overcome" and the words in... More

Loved this cathedral from first sight. Very impressive and so beautiful. Probably the best we have seen in our travels so far. Take your time wandering through so as to not miss anything. We kept going back past it daily just to gaze at such a beautiful sight.

If you find yourself in Bayeaux... take 20 minutes and walk into the Cathedral. It is a free attraction and it is amazingly beautiful on the inside. Classic Norman-Roman-Gothic accents abound in this very old site. It truly is lovely. I have also attended services here and they are lovely. Take a few extra minutes to visit the eerie crypt...
