In the 11th century after the Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066, ties with England were strong. You'll see a reference to the turbulent past above the south transept portal where sculpted scenes show the life of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury who was assassinated in Canterbury Cathedral on the orders of King Henry II of England. The Bayeux Tapestry was kept here from the 11th to the 18th centuries, probably displayed for the first time on the day the cathedral was consecrated in 1077 in the presence of William the Conqueror. « less

This cathedral was more appealing to me than Notre Dame. More simplicity, yet grand, enchanting, and truly sacred. I felt the presence of God in this place.

This is an astounding Cathedral to visit while in Bayeux. It was built in the 12th century and has had 90 or more Bishops in residence . it is alive and active parish church yet .. the stained glass windows were saved during the War as was most of Bayeux as it was not bombed or destroyed . The church... More

Bring your iPod loaded with Gregorian choirs and just imagine the experience. Centuries of people gathering here in this grandeur. Architecture that is Majestic in Place.

Some of the most beautiful and striking stained glass I've ever seen. Incredible choral performances are often held at this cathedral. This is a other must see visit for those spending time in the Normandy area.

Magnificent both inside and out, this soaring cathedral dominates the centre of the town of Bayeux and is well worth a visit. The large stained-glass windows and beautiful interior, with the many gothic details, are just beautiful.

Visited the cathedral expecting it to be dim and heavy like so many other French cathedrals. I was delighted to find how light and airy it was, how beautifully presented the ancient architecture incredible, pleased I went to the Tapestry museam first as I understood the building much more having seen the scale models of ancient building construction. Wonderful music... More
