In the 11th century after the Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066, ties with England were strong. You'll see a reference to the turbulent past above the south transept portal where sculpted scenes show the life of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury who was assassinated in Canterbury Cathedral on the orders of King Henry II of England. The Bayeux Tapestry was kept here from the 11th to the 18th centuries, probably displayed for the first time on the day the cathedral was consecrated in 1077 in the presence of William the Conqueror. « less

Interesting cathedral and history; well worth a visit even if you have seen many cathedrals in your time

Founded by Bishop Odo, brother of William the Conqueror in 1077, it was the original home of the Bayeux Tapestry. Visit the Crypt where frescoes of angels playing a variety of musical instruments can be seen.

Beautiful Cathedral with an interesting Syrian Photo Exhibit-and it's free. No guided tours though but worth a visit

During our visit only a few other people were at the Bayeux Cathedral so we had plenty of time to explore this wonderful and large site near the tapestry. Worth your time and a short walk from town.

Bayeux Cathedral is very impressive from the outside, particularly when lit up at night. Inside is a little less impressive (apart from the ceiling), feeling quite dark, with few stained glass windows and not many little side chapels. The crypt was closed for renovations when we were there. Maybe we were spoiled by last year's trip to the hugely impressive... More

It was quite difficult to work out where the entrance was, but once inside it was impressive. We only stayed a few minutes but could have easily stayed for an hour or so. You need to do your research in advance (which we didn't do) so that you understand all the 'attractions' .There isn't anything in English to explain what's... More

I have been to many many many cathedrals and have studied many of them academically. Some are grand. Others are awe-inspiring. . . This one is all of those things and it's just delightful in its beauty as well. It also offers a fascinating mix of the Romanesque and the gothic. Well worth a couple of hours and some return... This was the first cathedral we saw on this trip; we had been here about 10 years ago, but I had forgotten how inspiring it is. Well worth the time.

We happened upon a wedding beginning in the Cathedral on a Sat. afternoon, and hearing the organ was a special treat. The interior is, of course, magical, as ancient cathedrals are. However, what I have particularly loved about this cathedral is the way that it just "pops up" in the middle of town, and its beauty from the exterior. We... More

The sheer size and architecture makes this place a must see when in Bayeux. It has so much history and a magical atmosphere especially on a sunny day.
