Owner description: The cathedral of Notre-Dame in Bayeux is an impressive building, a mix of Romanesque in the 11th century crypt and glorious Gothic in the 13th-century nave. In the 11th century after the Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066, ties with England were strong. You'll see a reference to the turbulent past above the south transept portal where sculpted scenes show the life of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury who was assassinated in Canterbury Cathedral on the orders of King Henry II of England. The Bayeux Tapestry was kept here from the 11th to the 18th centuries, probably displayed for the first time on the day the cathedral was consecrated in 1077 in the presence of William the Conqueror.

Beautiful piece of architecture and church still in use. Impeccable inside and out, day or night. Really the central attraction of this beautiful little town.

We got a private tour by accident from a local lady who took us to see old relics in a back upstairs room that was from 300AD. Crazy amazing and interesting.

Cathedrale Notre Dame de Bayeux is a jewel of the little town. The Cathedral dates back to 11th century, was rebuilt several times after damaging fires, and luckily did not suffer too much from the allied forces bombing in 1944. The beautiful towers of the old church dominate the town: you can see them the minute you arrive and park... More

This is a huge church and is worth the stop, especially if you are in Bayeux to see the tapestry. This church is better than the tapestry. The stained glass in here is incredible. Be sure to go down into the crypt so you can see the 15th century frescos that are on the ceiling.

We saw a few cathedrals on our trip, including Notre Dame in Paris, but the Bayeux cathedral was my favorite. It's an attraction, but it's not touristy. We enjoyed a private, quiet tour of the cathedral at our own pace.

Out of all of the churches and cathedrals I have visited in North America and Europe, this is the most beautiful Cathedral I've experienced. It is more intimate than the Notre Dame in Paris, it lacks the crowds and allows a tourist to really explore for themselves the sections of a cathedral that interest them. The architecture is easy to... More

We toughly enjoyed our visit to the Bayeax Cathedral. It is a lovely small church with typical Catholic icons placed throughout. As a “working” church it is nice to see the personal touches that the local parishioners impart to their church. The church organ is very impressive and one can only imagine what it must sound like during a Mass.... More

Stunning cathedral! We were also able to take a guided tour to the top of the cathedral and out onto the roof which was amazing to see the flying buttresses up close as well as the view of the town.

I can see where comparisons with Winchester Cathedral come from - similar ages and built with the same Norman tradition
