Owner description: The cathedral of Notre-Dame in Bayeux is an impressive building, a mix of Romanesque in the 11th century crypt and glorious Gothic in the 13th-century nave. In the 11th century after the Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066, ties with England were strong. You'll see a reference to the turbulent past above the south transept portal where sculpted scenes show the life of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury who was assassinated in Canterbury Cathedral on the orders of King Henry II of England. The Bayeux Tapestry was kept here from the 11th to the 18th centuries, probably displayed for the first time on the day the cathedral was consecrated in 1077 in the presence of William the Conqueror.

Stayed in Bayeux to see all of the D Day sights. Was pleasantly surprised on what a beautiful city Bayeux was...primarily due to the Cathedral. What a sight especially at night. A beautiful landmark in a beautiful little city.

The Cathedral of Notre Dame of Bayeux could be the little brother or sister of Notre Dame in Paris. The architecture and the stained-glass windows are both similar – jaw-droppingly beautiful, outstanding. Aside from the much smaller size of the cathedral in Bayeux, on display was the gorgeous 1,100-kilogram brass “Bell of Peace and Freedom” that had been cast specifically... More

My wife and I visited the Cathedral during a four-day visit to Bayeux. It is massive for the small town in which it was built and rivals in scope and design the better-known cathedrals in Paris and Reims. The cathedral was consecrated in the year 1077, with participation by William the Conqueror, and it is a major example of religious... More

If you like cathedrales, you'll like this one. Very few of these survived the WWII battles and this is one of them.

As we visited the historic Cathedrale Notre Dame de Bayeux, this wonderful site reminded us of Ken Follett's novel, "Pillars of the Earth". Formally christened during 1066, this cathedral is a worthy visit. It is simply magnificent from it's huge doors to it's splendid spire, this is a must visit . While shopping in the small gift shop, a clerk... More

We stumbled upon the Cathedral on the day of our arrival in Bayeux while walking to just explore the area before dinner. This cathedral is absolutely amazing and the history is awe inspiring. Do not miss this when you visit the Bayeux/Normandy area. It will be a highlight of your trip!

Although it was too late to see the inside, we still enjoyed walking around the outside of this beautiful cathedral; very intricate stone work and impressive

Religious devotees will love this place, obviously, but atheists too will marvel at the scale, intricate and impressive architecture and sense of awe and wonder this building engenders in the visitor.

Very pretty church. Although, I can't say it stands out from the other hundreds of churches in Europe. It is worth stopping in for since it is free. We actually got to see a "back" room because one of the volunteers was there with keys. Very nice of him to show us.

This beautiful church is as big as Notre Dame and lovely. We actually toured with a private guide who provided very informative and interesting commentary to the history of the cathedral.
