What an amazing sight as le cite of Carcassonne comes into view, it is breathtaking. You can almost see and hear horses and knights of old on the ancient cobbled streets. The architecture is beautiful and the history of the place is almost tangible. There is a little train that travels round the great walls and then you can walk... more

My wife & I stayed in Carcassonne for one night only on a recent trip to Languedoc-Rousillon. We stayed in Hotel Montmorency which is practically at the foot of one of the entrances to La Cité. We spent an afternoon, evening & morning in La Cité which in our opinion is enough time to explore and view the place. We... more

I have visited Carcassonne twice in recent years and have really enjoyed both visits. The town itself is virtually traffic free (unless you are staying at a hotel within the castle walls) but there is a very large car park just outside the town. In busy periods you will need to arrive in the morning to get a place even... more

I was born there and I visit the Cité every year with my family. When entering , turn right into the outside fortifications instead of going straight in the main street. You will have a wonderful view from the "remparts", and you will be able to see architectural details dating from the Romans (those red bricks in the walls). Enter... more

The "city" is a somewhat false reconstruction by Viollet-le-Duc but still beautiful nonetheless. I would suggest a rental car and visiting the city for a day or two. Very good restaurants, including Michelin 1-star. But remember, French restaurants have extremely limited and strict hours for serving. Because of jet lag, I was unable to eat for more than 24 hours,... more

We visited Carcassonne in October and thought the Cite was a very interesting place\ to see the old windy streets and shops were great to look in and we were able to sit outside and enjoy a drink in the sun at lunchtime .We wished we had a CAR to explore the area eg. Narbonne .I found it interesting as... more

We stayed outside the city walls, arriving at night. We were told that if we went inside the gates, we should find plenty of places to eat. As we walked through the gates and down the first dark alleyway, it all seemed very unlikely. Then we stepped into the main square and were stunned by the difference. Lights were strung... more

We made a day trip to the Cite, but having been to the outstanding Peyrperteuse and Aigues Mortes already we were somewhat underwhelmed. It's very well-restored but inside is overly touristy. You have to pay just to walk the ramparts and some of the shops are pretty tacky. Quite expensive extras - to ride the carousel is €2.50 each for... more

I visited Carcassone while on a business trip to Toulouse. This medieval walled city/castle is only a short 45 minute drive from Toulouse. I went on a Sunday afternoon and the castle was fairly busy, but not to a point of being uncomfortable. The castle and walls are very impressive. It is worth it to pay the 7 euro fee... more
