The medieval city is fantastic. Old cobbled streets and lots of restaurants and shops. A great walled garden restaurant and beer garden near the top of the town close to the abbey. Very busy during the day with visitors quieter at night. If you're lucky to be staying in or near the city it is spectacular at night...floodlit walls....A beautiful... More

Back to the middle ages... fascinating fully preserved town. Very much like walking onto a cinema set but only... this time it's the real thing :-)

Enjoy the magic of Violet Le Duc's recreation of the walled city and ramparts. Don't miss the film in the chateau.

The city is fun to wander with lots of photo possibilities. Many places to eat and shop. Good parking - fairly accessible.

I've been to walled/castellated towns in Italy, but this is an amazing medieval castle. There has been some sort of fortification here since Roman times, one can see the strategic importance of the site. It helps to read something about the Albigensian crusade against the Cathars and the genocide initiated by Pope Innocent III, if you don't like reading history... More

Ok, yes it's a world heritage site, yes it looks like it could be the set for Sleeping Beauty, but I think it's one great tourist trap. Very disappointed, there are other wh sites in France that are no where near as commercialised. Oh, did I mention the 8.50 plus 4.50 audio guide to access the Central keep? We were... More

You can easily spend a very full day here. Just wander the grounds, picnic or browse the many shops and food outlets. There is even a mini fairground to indulge the little ones. You can choose to take in one of the medieval shows such as jousting etc and they are really well done. The place can get Very busy... More

Carcasonne is a fortified medieval city that was caught in the center of the 13th-century violence known as the Albigensian Crusade. In this brutal military action, Crusader knights sought out and killed members of a Christian sect that are now known as Cathars. Carcasonne was the headquarters of one of the four bishops of the Cathar faith. In the mid-12th... More

On a recent stay in Cap d'Agde my husband and I booked an excursion with a local firm called Aux Detours des Sentiers. I found the tour guide Ann excellent. We had a wonderful visit to this restored medieval cite. Be prepared to suffer winds, Ann said that it is always windy , and as our visit was in March... More
