It is exciting driving up to the city the first time. Even those who don't really like medieval history can enjoy walking the cobble streets or sitting in the beautiful cathedral. Some people seem dismayed it isn’t a perfect recreation from the 12th century, but If it wasn't for a few preservation minded locals in the 1800’s, nothing would exist... More

Forget about the tourist shops and concentrate on the buildings, the castle, the inner castle, the outer walls - need I go on?! This place is seriously impressive. Yes the cobbled streets have lots of 'tacky' tourist shops but you don't need to go in them - just look at the history and heritage. Take time to go around the... More

Carcassonne is an incredible city just to walk around in. It's very touristy, but well worth the visit.

First impressions on the approach to the ramparts was ""wow", its sheer scale is impressive. Going through the gates and touring round takes a bit of the gloss off as the commercialisation - I understand some saying Disneyfication - may disappoint many visitors. Going through to the castle and ramparts was interesting, the guidebook or audio tour gives a bit... More

Whilst i understand that a location like this is going to attract commercialism i can only say that we were disappointed with Carcassone. My best summary is that its a UNESCO heritage site struggling to work out whether it is just that or a Disney Theme Park. Upon first entering the gates you are confronted with a street of tacky... It's right out of a fairy tale. I have visited a lot of castles through Europe but this was the first time that the inner 5 yr. old princess in me really got excited. It is touristy now which is sad to see and the streets are filled with tourist shops and restaurants but you still get the feeling of... More

When you drive around the corner you are awestuck by the sheer size of this place. I only had an hour but soon realized it will take longer than that so we went through the shops along the road. Need all day to see this.

Very nice medieval city to visit slowly, to take time for a lunch in the central place, to visit the Château and to listen the music in the Cathedrale !!

We travelled to the Carcassonne area because of the attraction of the whole region, but also because we had heard so much about Carcassonne Cite. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the cite, but would recommend that anyone visiting try to time their visit for a quieter time of day. The streets were heaving with visitors during the prime hours... More

Be aware that the original chateau fell into disrepair and what you see now is an 19th. century reproduction.
