La Cite was amazing. We wandered up late in the afternoon, had. Great dinner, and then wandered some more at night. Go at night. The whole area is still very lively and the walls and city look great lit up. Also, fewer people at night with everything open. Great time for a drink or dessert somewhere.

It is a complete medieval city outside, as well as inside. By walking around inside the city you feel like you have time travelled bak in the medieval ages!

Visited here on a day trip from Toulouse as my fiancee loves the area, the streets are small and windy as they were back in the medieval days, however can be very busy and congested during the summer holidays. Take a look up and down the side streets too, we found a great wee cafe for lunch and got the... More

Carcassonne is extremely beautiful - we visited some time ago but having been elsewhere in France this summer I think nowhere we went this time was quite as lovely as Carcassonne. - It is exactly how you will have imagined from historical novels etc - but it is very busy indeed, so if you want the picture postcard photo memories... Carcassonne cite is truly breathtaking with one of the largest fortresses you'll see. Viewed from the town the facades are truly imposing. It's such a pity therefore to find that the interior had been cynically turned into little more than a theme park with scant regard for the architectural history of the place. Filled with shops full of tourist tat... More

I had expected this to be very cheesy, but I actually enjoyed it. The medieval Cite is a bit tourisy as you walk up the streets to the castle, but if you get there in the morning before it gets too busy then it is actually quite atmospheric. The Castle visit and walk along the ramparts is good, but as... More

Certainly worth a trip to see this lovely castle although I do think you are better having accommodation away from the castle as it is a very busy area and I think you only need to visit it once. Free entrance but then you pay to see different parts of the castle if you want to. We were there in... More

I had been looking forward to Carcassonne for many years so had high expectations. Even so, it was crammed with tourists squeezing along main lanes and the very commercial shops. Walking along the perimeter of the ramparts was better. For true medieval experiences, there are many better places - France is full of pretty medieval villages. La Citee had been... More

Loved visiting this medieval walled city. It is closed to traffic and only for pedestrians. You can walk the stone streets and imagine what it was like to live during that time. There are plenty of shops and cafes along the way. Plus a lovely cathedral to visit. Highly recommend a visit here. Be prepared for lots of walking.

I thought the Walled City was going to be a great trip into the medieval history of France and all it was a castle, not unlike many of the other castles in France and filled to the brim with tourists and cheezy souvenir shops and lousy restaurants. if you have to see the castle, make it a stopover on the...
