Liked the old city, but everything in is far too over priced, very many people, too many shops selling the same, all tourist things relating to the old city.

well worth a visit, a short climb up the hill to some breathtaking views and plenty of history. Even the little train around the perimeter was worth it and very informative.

A beautiful medieval city. The fortress is very impressive and immaculately restored. Takes you back in history. Surrounded by the Pyrenees, very picturesque. The local cuisine and wine is a temptation to take you back to Carcassonne. Must visit place and if one has the time to take a boat ride on the Canal du Midi is an excellent idea... More

A previous trip to La Cite a number of years ago found us elbow to elbow to tourists, and while an impressive site, the crowds took away from the experience. This September, while on a Canal Midi boat trip, we walked up to La Cite from the marina at dusk. Fewer visitors, and after dark the lights made this an... More

we had only a short afternoon and evening, so surely did not get to see any of the sites, but we did get to tour around the city (the little train tour), walk through its main entrance, and enjoyed some food and the beautiful sweets store... We should return to explore in more depth. The city is surely a paradise... More

This ought to be one of the wonders of the world. Carcassonne is a huge walled city and it is beautifully preserved. OK, it's rammed with us tourists and packed with shops selling every conceivable kind of tourist souvenir (and some tres expensive stuff too). But it also has dozens of restaurants and wonderful views and monumental architecture. It's a... More

If you imagine a castle from a fairy tale, this is it. If you are in the area, it would be a shame to miss seeing it.

We went twice and we found it much better to arrive about 3pm and wander around the narrow cobbled streets as the crowds died down. There is a lovely feel about the place and the variety of shops is great given it is such a tourist attraction. Although you pay to go into the fortress area the outside lanes are... More

Everything you imagine and more.we stayed close to the Porte (gate )and spent a whole day here. Not too crowded and lots to see.The battlement walk is definitely a must. The cathedral is special with stained glass windows and at the time there was a group of male singers from Eastern Europe who were amazing.Especially the counter tenor who sang Ave Maria.... I have always wanted to go to Carcassonne and I was not disapionted. The old town was wonderful, and felt very original, though open streets are not very original of a medieval city. It had been kept in fairly good condition. There are quite a number of attractions and restaurants all fairly close to, so if you find walking hard... More
