How can you not be impressed by the Cite. Lovely to visit in February when the streets are quiet. The Basilique St-Nazaire has colourful windows and shouldn't be missed

We have now made four visits to La Cite and in the past have found it difficult to really appreciate the town, ramparts and castle through the often horrendous crowds. A visit in February put things right when we almost had the place to ourselves and were able to take in the wonderful views and wander round at leisure and... More

We stayed at a B&B only a two were three minute walk away which I have reviewed looks out on the castle. You will not believe the sheer size of the castle until you are there standing B-side the old Roman walls and upon entering how amazing it is that people still live within the walls and also the basilica.... Quite a wonder that somewhere like this has been preserved in such detail. Very much enjoyed walking around the battlements and taking in the sights around the enclave but also marvellous to be able to be in such a wonder

We stopped over in Carcassonne whilst doing a trip down the Canal du Midi. It was June and there was a music festival on the go, brillant vibe. hte walk from the canal to the castle is quite far but manageable, my wife had a hip replacement and she made it!

Carcassonne is in southern France’s Languedoc Region, it is a medieval citadel, a medieval fortified town with its massive walls of defense encircling the Castle, the surrounding buildings, its streets and a Gothic cathedral. Once you park your car at the entrance of this citadel and walk along a drawbridge, you enter another world –cobbled streets, restaurants, bars, small stores... More

This walled restored city was fascinating. Sure they have all the tourist trappings you would expect, but it gave you a sense of life during that period of time. The cathedral was stunning. The choices of restaurants were varied. Kids will love it and learn some history too! Sample the famous cassoulet of this region at any number of restaurants... More

Beautiful, a bit dull outside of season and definitely difficult to find a decent restaurant that's actually open. Weird. But, we went just after new year, so it might be a completely transformed space during the warmer seasons. The cathedral is really interesting. You can sneak into the hotel nearby and go through into the gardens. The castle museum is... More

This is a visit you won't forget and will want to return if you can. It's a splendid complete medieval walled city with a remarkable Cathar history. Inside the walls, it is very touristy and often very busy but this does not distract you from the magic of the place. The tour of the historic medieval walls and castles us... More
