We arrived at Carcassonne in the afternoon and drove around trying to find a sign for the mediaeval city. All we saw at this stage was a fortified town as seen in pictures of it with cars parked all around it and several entrances. We parked at a bay and entered. The narrow streets of houses eventually gave way to... More

We were concerned that our children ( ages 8 and 9), might be bored with "yet another castle" but the medieval city of Carcassonne offers more than just another castle. Plan for at least 2 hours and make sure to wear comfortable shoes. The entrance fee for the castle itself is reasonable and worth the visit. The rest of the... More

Well maintained and restored. It got very crowded with tour buses by lunch time but you could still find a quiet place to eat away from the center. The castle self-guided audio tour is great. The general walking tour focused too much on architecture and not enough on history. Go back in the evening when it's dark to get a... More

We visited the cite on a day in may, and we had a great experience. Not too crowded, great views, interesting visit of the basilica and the keep. Nice walking in the neighbourhood... I can imagine that it is extremely touristy in summer...

We visited La Cite de Carcassonne in the Aude department and felt like we had gone back several centuries. Set high up on a hill, the ancient walled city is a collection of drawbridges, towers and cobbled streets and is a must-see on any trip through this part of France. Parking is just below the Cite and is reasonably priced.... More

Excellent restoration of this ancient walled castle city. Plenty to see and the audio tour of the main citadel is well worth the few Euros more.Take a whole day to amble about. Loads of food areas both eat in and take away. Can get very crowded in high season.

Very interesting old fortress with plenty of shops and restaurants to chose from. It reminded me of something that Disney would have built except this one is for real.

IT's almost like stepping back 600 years. The reconstruction is great. If you can ignore the other tourists and some of the tacky shops it is a Great place to visit and I strongly recommend it

I found Carcassonne very disappointing. Considering its World Heritage Site status, the visitor might expect to learn something of the history of the place and get a feeling for the life the inhabitants might have experienced. This may be the case if you sign up for a guided tour, but if you simply walk around you find only a succession... More

If you are interested in historic site, this is a must see. While there is some controversy among medieval site purist over the authenticity of Carcassonne Cite, you cannot go away without a true sense of what medieval cities were like. Before entering the Cite, take the Le Petite train ride around the entire length of the outer walls. The... More
