Stepping back in time.

Was here in November 2006 - incredible history. Loved every minute of the Medieval city - and we were blessed to stay in a small B & B inside the walls. Would love to go back.

I struggled to rate the Cité Medieval de Carcassone. Is it filled with tourist shops selling all manner of Tshirts and kid-sized swords? Yes. Is it being loved to death by the crowds that sometimes jam its quaint streets? Also, yes. Does it look like something Disney might create? To some degree, yes. But here's the thing. There is real,... More

Almost indescribably beautiful, iconic Medieval city with loads of charm, atmosphere, a history and it is also very romantic. You truly feel like a child when approaching it, walking down the drawbridge entrance and through the very high walls into the city! You are in a city onto of a hill that people still work and live in. There are... More

My mouth fell open when I saw it from afar when I got close I was like a child in a candy shop. All my boyhood dreams of knights and dragons came alive in this truly awe inspiring example of a medieval fortress and city. The best thing it is still fully functioning, to sit beneath the walls and eat... More

Great way to spend a day. Fascinating city built on top of this hill. Shops are a bit touristy, but there are some gems if you have the time to seek them out. Loved the linen shop which stocked excellent quality linen.

We spent a whole day in the Medieval City and thoroughly enjoyed it. The history of the place is fascinating and this was really well explained by our guide on an escorted English speaking walking tour - booked at and starting from the Tourist Information centre just inside the Narbonnaise Gate. Great value at €6 per person for a 75... More

A great walled city, worth a 2 day visit. Lots of history, we got a 1/2 day personal tour and loved it. Everything is clean and well maintained, lots of restaurants for lunch.

But unfortunately like a shopping mall. Pity they can't put the commerce in the park just outside the gates. Go early before the tourists arrive! And eat & drink at the bars & cafés in the street beneath the old cité - or at the Bastide ( Carcassonne 'new' town).

A fairy tale city with a gory past. Wonderful place to stroll around and learn the history behind the Cathars. Lots of shops and bars and very good restaurants. Loved it.

Seeing this walled, medieval city from a distance one is awestruck by its beauty. BUt once inside the city walls, souvenirs are the "plat de jour." A smattering of hotels and restaurants add to the mix. The best time to see it, from the outside, is on France's Bastille day in July. Fireworks light up the entire city and the... More
