There are quite a lot of them, and they are not all close to Carcassonne. We hired a car and visited Queribus and Peyrepertuse, stopping at Lagrasse on the way (completely dead and a waste of time off season) The two are close together, but about 2 hours from Carcassonne by car, and through remote countryside. The walk up to... More

Not for the faint hearted! The drive up to these castles is hair raising! The Cathar Castles and the climb to Peyrepertuse is daunting but worth every second. I am terrified of heights but I pushed on and witnessed a spectacular feat of architecture that leaves you speechless...... Peyrepertuse must be seen to be believed!

There are several Cathar castles, but two, Peyrepertuse and Queribus, stand out as they face one another across a wide valley. Both are splendid in their different ways but be prepared to climb! Google the history of these ancient monuments to put them in context, but just be amazed anyway.

Perched dangerously upon mountains, the Cathar castles are incomparable. The climb th Peyrepertuse is daunting if you are neither fit nor young, but worth the effort. Queribus etc also sensational.

These are an amazing insight into what man can build in the most amazing places. The castles both ruins or in the case of Carcassonne are a wonder to walk round and investigate the history of the Cathar's and the crusades against them. Learn all about Simon De Montford and his part in history both in Britain and abroad. I... More

After walking the walls and going through the medieval town, we paid to go inside the castle. This included some better walls, lots of stairs and some terrific rooms. Well worth it.

I did a lot of preparation before we got to southern France. Not physical, but research. I read all about the Cathars and the Albigensian Crusade. It is a fascinating period of history with a lot of bias and "romance" entwined with fact. A great source was the website: www.cathar.info It told about the Cathar belief system, their history, and... More
