With so many ruins in the region, it's nice to visit something restored. OK, it's full of tourists, but that's why your there isn't it?

The Cathar Castles are the most interesting places, to me, in the entire region. It doesn't hurt that there are many vineyards in close proximity.

The two hour drive to this chateau is worth it! The ruins rise out of the cliffs. We watched a show with hawks and other birds. On our way back we drove through the Gorges de Galamus which is spectacular!

As long as you don't mind driving visit all the castles you can. Especially Peyrepeteuse as it is so high and well restored. Montsegur may be a problem as there are a lot of car thefts from the unsecure public car park.

This place is fantastic, you will be blown away by the history of this Medieval Castle, once inside you can see how people lived in days gone bye, there are also plenty of shops you can purchase from and at the peak of the castle you have a wonderful selection of restaurants to eat at.

Nothing to dislike. If you don't mind walking up steep paths to visit a Cather Castle, you will get to see a lot of History in fairly good condition and wonderful views.

The Cathar castles are well worth a visit. Make sure you have several days to do the walks and soak up the atmosphere. Oh, and take your head for heights with you, several are positioned on very high cliffs. Try to read up about the Cathars before you go - it's part of the atmosphere even if you conclude that...
