visiting the castles, spread around the mountains in Aude is an amazing combination of scenery and history.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Cathar Castles. Those poor Albigensians (Cathars) surely suffered for their "heresy". The Pope basically gave carte blanche to kill them and take their lands. Anyhow it is hard to imagine the large number of people holed up in Monsegur Castle for so long! The views are fantastic and the climb is not too... More
The castles are in the middle of no where it seems but the windy roads and uphill climbs are from a different era. My famly enjoyed an afternoon at the Chateau Queribus. Hard to beat.
This is one of the most famous and notorious Cathar castles. It is said to have been the location of the last Cathar stand and the mystery surrounding it is very interesting. The story goes that the people of the castle were protecting the Holy Grail, which was then smuggled out before they surrendered and were burned. You will need... More
The castles of Montsegur and Roquefixade ,the latter free, are well worth the climb, not only for the magnificent views(of each other amongst the rest) but also of the insight into the lives of the Cathars who lived and died there so long ago. Having made the effort a number of times now we would consider these places essential stop... More
We visited Château de Quéribus and Château de Peyrepertuse during our trip - both very close to each other and perfectly doable in one day. A long time lover of old castles and avid photographer, I was looking forward to the trip and wasn't disappointed. The scenery surrounding the castles are great, with beautiful rolling hills and jagged outcrops -... More
Most are worth a visit , but if I had just one site after Carcassonne , I would recommend a vist to Lastours. The viewing point is set high over a valley in which you can actually see the remains of 5 castle , for those fit enough you can enough walk the steep pathways up to them.Close by at... More
Wear comfortable shoes and it gets windy (our visit in October). We "toured" with one of the guides who we met at the tourist information. 10euros per person and very worthwhile as he was very knowledgeable. our 2.5 hour trip was quite tiring as we did a lot of walking around the castle and then across the bridge and into... Loads of such differing castles in beautiful locations. Good choice is to pick the ones that suit you and in some cases the level of fitness. Enjoy the route mm TTY the villages and the wide choice of wines and places to eat. The castle at Lapradelle-Puilaurens is well worth the hike to the top with stunning views of the... More
