Over the last few years we have visited all the significant Cathar Castles. They range from large and popular (Queribus & Peyrepertus), through spectactularly inaccessible but worth it (Montsegur) to almost town centre with easy access (Foix). There are many more besides. If you read a little bit of Cathar history before you start your visits will be all the... More

Nice place to visit, you will have a nice view over the modern Carcassonne; take your camera and enjoy nice pictures. One thing is the queue to buy the tickets, a bit long, so if you can buy them in advance, I suggest to do that! Enjoy the visit!

Breathtaking attractions, with wonderful views and he opportunity to really understand the historic significance of these buildings. Climbing up to them is not for the faint hearted or tired legs, but if was worth the effort! If history inspires you, this is the place to be - and fewer tourists than the big historic attractions at he height of the... More

There are so many castles to visit both north and south of Carcassonne. The locations of the castles are of themselves amazing. Built in the hills often miles from any obvious civilisation it is nothing short of astounding to think of the armies that marched up to them and besieged them all those hundreds of years ago. Then when you... More

Utterly breathtaking. Like being on top of the world. Set my imagination on fire! The walk up is fine as long as you have something sensible on your feet. Coming down is a bit more tricky and may involve clutching the hand of your nearest and dearest. But it's worth it.

When you visit your first castle, buy the passport (€2) which will give you a discount to all of the other 23 sites in the region. Then plot your holiday to visit at least six of them and you will not be disappointed.

These castles are an absolute must on any itinerary to this area. We took our 7 and 5 year old sons and they loved it. It is a 2km round trip with some steep areas so bring water and good walking shoes. Excellent patisserie/cafe next to post office where you can sit overlooking the river and enjoy the view up... Loved visiting some of the castles, they are amazing and well worth the climb that some of them have. Great for kids as lots of paths and walls to climb. The views from the top of some of them are just amazing. Come on down
