Be sure to wear shoes with good grips as some of the climbs are steep and be careful when you look down! A very moving experience. Lots of history learnt.

To visit some Cathar castles you really need a car. Public transport is virtually non-existent in this region. From Carcassonne I toured to the chateaus Rennes-le chateau, Puivert, Montségur, and Foix. I managed Lastours by bus, hitching a ride back to Carcassonne, and I managed Saissac by bike. In contrast to Carcassonne, many of these castles are in a ruinous... More

The story of the Cathars whilst basically true is of course is built upon as a tourist reason to visit the area. That said, there is the history of the Spanish/French border coupled with the Roman Catholic Pope and the religion of the Cathar faith. You really need a car or a a tour to access these, good walking boots and plenty of energy. You also need several days. They are all different and stunning

In addition to getting a bit of the history (in French) we got a number of very good photos from vantage points that you would not otherwise get. They told us that the city of the Cathars was under siege . They filled... More

The more you learn of the Cathars the more you want to know and I spent my money on two separate occasions by paying for a guide with good historical knowledge. Cathar Country Tours.

We stayed in a great Gite in Salsigne and explored the whole area visiting as many castles as we could fit in. A perfect week.

Fabulously atmospheric structures and landscapes; perched on steep hillsides, reached by winding roads, complete with hairpin turns and drops. Great views too.
