Whole site seemed to be more about the person who largely rebuilt the walls and castle and what a good job he did, rather than about the history of the place

The town is absolute gorgeous , a mix of history and nice restaurants on the same time. And nice small shops.

we saw Peyrepertuse and Queribus one day, and Puilaurans the next. The first is a little hard to find, back roads not too well marked, at least from the northwest. But it is spectacular, 3 small ruined castles strung out on top of a hill. You can't believe these things were built on top of mountains by hand 1000 years... More

Queribus is the best preserved castle and easiest to get to. The views are superb but not for those scared of heights

As usual with famous castles, it is overcrowded with tourist and tourist traps. Souvenir shops, candy shops, tourist restaurants are to be found everywhere. But if you can look past it or come at a quieter time, it is a truly beautiful and splendid castle that is well worth a visit. We visited the castle around 4pm where it is... More

Hard to know where to begin...........the dramatic limestone mountainous backdrop, the stunning scenic drives in and out of the region, the scale and challenges of these ancient fortifications or the tragic history that permeates their construction and reason for existence..........so many stories to tell so much human endeavour to create these special places and fantastic that they have been preserved...take... I heartily recommend traveling around to visit the Cathar sites! Most of them are out in the countryside and require some walking. They also require some walking shoes. The experience and the views are rewarding and you get to be outside. In very bad weather, the stones and paths could be treacherous! You may want to save them for a... More

This mediaeval village high above Mazamet is a must if you want to see a ruined Cathar castle and village away from the crowds in mid summer. The delightful cafe (with equally delightful owners) with a outdoor patio perched so high that you see for miles to the north. Mediaeval garden is a must and is easily missed, as it... More

There are many castles you can visit in this region, but one not to be missed is the Cathar Castles at Las Tours. They are 4 fortress type structures built high up on a very steep range accessible only by foot. The walk up there is reasonably arduous but totally worth it. There is signage up there to give you... Very interesting and worth visiting. Reasonably priced. World heritage site. Not good if you have difficulty walking.
