We enjoyed our rainy day in Paris walking with Richard through the market and neighborhood of Marais/Bastille. He pointed out some fantastic restaurants, bakeries, a tea shop, and some other wonderful gourmet businesses and interesting local attractions. We tasted some lovely cheese, sweets, and had a nice coffee at a local shop. Looking forward to the next time!

I am a professional photographer and my travel plans called for me to spend a couple of days in Paris on my return trip from shooting the great migration of the wildebeests in the Serengeti region of Tanzania. Paris has always been my number one location to shoot since becoming a photographer and I was referred to Richard by some... More

Richard gave me a personal tour of his neighborhood and brought me into courtyards and buildings I would have never known were "public." Also showed me a variety of wonderful shops where I didn't feel pressure to buy. Highly recommend the tour. I would consider doing another tour on my next trip to Paris.

My husband and I and two teenagers (ages 17 and 15) went on a wonderful tour with Richard on New Year's Eve day. It was our first trip to Paris and it was great to get an insider's view of the city. He is very knowledgable about the history and arcitecture of Paris. We took great pictures of the Eiffel... More

We spent 3 days with Richard, walking through the St. Germain area, the Marais area, and a chocolate tour. We have 2 children, ages 10 and 8, and Richard was wonderful with them, he kept them engaged, ans most importantly, they had a great time, and learned so much! We have been to Paris before, but after reading the terrific... More

I only had a two-day visit to Paris on a stop-over, so I wanted to concentrate on one neighborhood specifically and wanted to get the most of my time. I had never been to le Marais in my past two visits to Paris. When I stumbled upon Richard's blog and read an entry about hidden courtyards in the area, I... More

My daughters (30 & 27) and I started our trip in Paris. We had each been to Paris once before and had seen the top of the list tourist attractions then. We were looking for a relaxed way to see Paris from more of a local perspective. I have been reading Richard's blogs for some time, so I contacted him... More

Staying in Le Marais

Neighborhood Profile
Le Marais
The Marais is a winding maze of multi-faceted streets that beg to be explored. It bursts with small boutiques, historic buildings, cozy traditional restaurants, and hidden parks. Around each corner, you'll come across little gems of architecture spanning the centuries, from understated medieval towers to classical libraries and 17th century splendor. This neighborhood unites a rich mix of people of all ages, but it's best known for the gay scene mostly in the south and the Jewish community around Rue des Rosiers.
