We went to The Catacombs on Tuesday, October 20, 2009, and there was a sign on the door stating that the catacombs were closed indefinitely due to vandalism. This was pretty disappointing as we had already encounted the Egyptian wing of the Louvre being closed, the Picasso museum is closed (for a year long renovation) and Warhol's silkscreen of Elizabeth... more

The Catacombs was by far the most exciting, educational attraction in Paris. Yes you have the Eiffel tower, but if your willing to explorer the underground you will be amazed. no flash photography is allowed (decays the remains) so if you have a low light camera, please bring it. be kind to those who rest there. you will not forget... more

I had to wait in line for over an hour and almost didn't get in the door before they closed, but I am glad I stuck it out. Quite a few stairs that would have made the trip tough for anyone with bad knees, but once you were down in the tunnels the walk was pretty easy. A very interesting... more

Even though my wife and I were only in Paris for a short trip, the Catacombes were definitely worth the visit. The Catacombes are only a few steps away from the Denfert-Rochereau Metro stop, and are pretty easy to find. There was a wait of about an hour to get in when we visited in late August. As some of... more

The kids had this in their top 3 list of Paris, so we stood in line for an hour to see it. Our kids were by far the youngest visitors (and they were free, by the way.). Nearly everyone else was in the 18-30 range, lots of gothy-looking types. After a long walk underground, you finally reach the catacombs. At... more

The Catacombs are a sprawling labyrinth of tunnels and underground mines that have been used for centuries. In the late 1700s, the local cemetery was evacuated and the remains (mostly leg bones and skulls) were moved into the Catacombs. The bones are stacked into interesting configurations – some are extremely beautiful. Once you’ve done the major tourist sites in Paris,... more

Whereas I like to walk - I don't enjoy standing in long lines with the possibilty of not even getting in. Cut-off time is 4:00 pm. If you've been waiting in line for an hour + and 4 pm comes - too bad - wait again tomorrow! Luckily, I got in at 3:40! Get there early in the morning (0900... more

I thought this was something neat to do while in Paris. If you are looking for romance, then this is probably not the place for you. It only takes an hour or so to go through. I do agree with others that a guided/audio tour would have made the experience more enjoyable. I think not being able to take flash... more

Maybe it's because they've been overhyped by friends and acquaintances, but I wasn't totally blown away by the catacombs. We had a good experience - we were there early so there was a short line and we were basically by ourselves in the catacombs (with the thousands of bones of course)! It was interesting and it only took an hour... more
