In addition to the view, there is a zoo, an insectorium, an aquarium, and a museum about the French Resistance. We visited the insect zoo and loved it, and also the museum dedicated to the resistance. While that museum is sad, it is well worth a visit. Very interesting and lots of artifacts and photographs. We should always remember this... More

Impressive structure, beautiful views, lots to do. If you only have time for one museum, visit the Resistance and Deportation Museum. Excellent for kids, too, with among others a zoo, an insectarium, and a "animals of the night" exhibit. Do count on spending half a day here, at least.

Walking up the steep flights of stairs to reach the for was hard, but not impossible. The access to this amazing vantage point is great, by foot or by car. It was good to see there is work being done to restore some of the buildings, and what is there is well kept. You cannot beat the setting and the... More

We were here only en route South, and had seen it only when we came back from our dinner on the river - but we went up (in our car - no great problem parking, in spite of the many warnings) and walked up to the top. It is an amazing place, made even more so by the sight -... More

This place has a very interesting history and the area devoted to Besancon during World War 2 was particularly interesting and very well documented.

The citadelle of Besancon is located high above the city of Besancon and offers stunning views over the city and the hills of the Jura. It hosts a museum of the resistance and a brilliant multimedia show in the old chapel highlights the importance of the Citadelle throughout the history with its various up and downs. Being lucky you will... More

I do enjoy going round Vauban forts. This is a pretty good example, made slightly weird by the presence of a zoo inside. It is one of the larger Vauban constructions - and he did construct a lot, and is situated on a hill above the town, which was also fortified. During the war Brirish women were interned here for... If you choose to stay outside to have a view of Besancon, that is absolutely fine. But the historical meaning of this place is what I walked away from the Citadelle. It is very "local" tourist site, yes, but it really shows you visually how the concentration camp life was, and a good reminder what had happened in the history.

If in Besançon, obviously this is the first place to visit. If in good shape, the best way to ascend to La Citadelle, is by the stairs starting next to hotel Les Sauvages. Beware though, you can easily spend most of the day up there, due to the rather eclectic & extensive mix. Kids definately will love the place.

to climb up to the Citadelle. I know how depressing it can be to watch animals in a zoo, but this one is clean and not over-populated. Then you can enjoy a fantastic view over the city of Besançon. Enjoy your visit!
