It all started on a nice sunny day of July, I was looking to take a walk along the city or "Randonnée" in French. I started to walk the road up the Citadelle which by the way it's a heavy walk but satisfying if you like it. Upon arrival to the Citadelle entrance you can not miss the magnific view... More

We walked up from the bottom, thinking parking would be scarce. It was not. The walk was long and hot. I wanted to go for the Vauban museum. Unfortunately that part was only one room.

I was very surprised. The view over Besancon is worth the entry fee alone yet the museums are fantastic (especially the French Resistance museum). They have a zoo as part of the citadel including lions and tigers. A definite must. You will need say 2 hours in the citadel and if you are energetic walk up the 300 or so... More

Our visit to La Citadelle was amazing! One admission covers the zoo and all other museums and attractions within besides the fascinating fortress itself. If you're interested in Vauban, the Citadelle should not be missed. Oh, and did I mention that at the aquarium you can pet the fish! Be sure your legs are in shape because there is some... More

Very well preserved and used in many ways, it is a joy to visit for the grownups and children alike. Give a good view on the surroundings, the little Zoo is for sure an attraction, if the weather is nice, you could spend easily half a day without feeling the time.

Very nice citadel form the 17th century, with 4-5 different museums and a very nice zoological parc.

Just to echo everything that has been said below about this amazing Citadel - one of the highlights of our trip to the area! Fantastic views from the top necessitate a very steep climb but take your time and enjoy the way up past the Cathedral. Best tip is to go first thing when it opens as we had the... More
