Well, with limited French this place does leave you asking questions. I bought a guide but it was not helpful for all of the various exhibitions on at the time, as the exhibtions seem to change quite often. It was 36 degrees on the day I visited and I am very happy that I decided to go to the 'access... More

The Citadel affords fantastic views across the town and to the beautiful countryside beyond, We used a public bus no. 27 from near the arch at the bottom of the hill, because it is a steep ascent. The architecture is wonderful. Entrance to the Citadel itself is free, but charges apply to go enter the fortifications. We did not enter,... More

As I drove up to Besancon, I told my wife that I didn't see how this was a Vauban fortress. High vertical walls and ancient battlements didn't fit my image of star shaped salients and gently sloping glacis. And, indeed, Vauban did not create this citadel. He took it, and then improved it. Making it a delightful example of the... More

A fun way to spend an afternoon, watching the animals and enjoying a picnic with a good view. It's worth the year if you live in the area, especially if you have children as they enjoy return visits to see the animals. I enjoyed experiencing the seasonal changes as well. I've gone by bus and by driving, and found both... More

Good value; a wonderful zoo where you get very close to the animals; 360 degree views over the city; a beautiful setting that is not crowded, even in July.

Whether it is Vauban's fortress, the history of the Franche-Comté, the World War II resistance, the magnificent views from the ramparts, or just the baboons and koi fish that appeal to your interest, the citadel is well worth the (elusive) bus ride and the €10.60 admission charge. There must surely be something for everybody here!

Many museums within one. Not only is it in a spectacular position, the view looking up at it as well as looking out over the walls when within it... both breathtaking. Good for families, children, history lovers, nature buffs and just about anyone.

Great view. Interesting old fort. Strange to see how they've turned it into a zoo in addition to the historic fort so be prepared for that if you're not aware of it as I wasn't. I'd recommend it as a place to see in Besancon!

We arrived by barge into Besancon from dole and the citadelle is just awe inspiring and amazing and it's the first thing you see on entering Besancon via the waterways. A closer visit is even much more spectacular as the scenery from its watch towers and walls are just beautiful. There is also a zoo , an insect and fish... More
