Many museums within one. Not only is it in a spectacular position, the view looking up at it as well as looking out over the walls when within it... both breathtaking. Good for families, children, history lovers, nature buffs and just about anyone.

Great view. Interesting old fort. Strange to see how they've turned it into a zoo in addition to the historic fort so be prepared for that if you're not aware of it as I wasn't. I'd recommend it as a place to see in Besancon!

We arrived by barge into Besancon from dole and the citadelle is just awe inspiring and amazing and it's the first thing you see on entering Besancon via the waterways. A closer visit is even much more spectacular as the scenery from its watch towers and walls are just beautiful. There is also a zoo , an insect and fish... More

A visit to the Citadelle should be on your to do list if you are in Besancon. Very well documented history of the resistance period. At the Musee Comtois you walk through the last 3 centuries of life in Franche Comte. children will love the aquarium, insectarium, noctarium and the zoo. From the ramparts enjoy the panoramic view of Besancon... More

Made the mistake of parking near the river so had a very high climb with so many steps to reach the Citadelle, considered Vauban's masterpiece--a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is really an experience for the French with a range of family activities, including a natural history museum (some sad looking animals), a Frache-Comte museum, and the museum of the... More

The external part of the citadel is open to the public, with a €10.6 charge for entrance to the main parts, which includes exhibitions, a zoo, aquarium and cafe. The tourist train ends up here and avoids the steepish climb up from the town. The fortifications sit on a loop in the Doubs river and tower over 100m above it... More

It is a long climb if you go on foot from the centre.... but not unpleasant. The first part of the citadelle is still free acces and you already have a nice view of the town and countryside sitting on the grass of the slopes. Pity the two main towers are still in repair. Because now we missed the view... More

In addition to the view, there is a zoo, an insectorium, an aquarium, and a museum about the French Resistance. We visited the insect zoo and loved it, and also the museum dedicated to the resistance. While that museum is sad, it is well worth a visit. Very interesting and lots of artifacts and photographs. We should always remember this... More

Impressive structure, beautiful views, lots to do. If you only have time for one museum, visit the Resistance and Deportation Museum. Excellent for kids, too, with among others a zoo, an insectarium, and a "animals of the night" exhibit. Do count on spending half a day here, at least.
