This is a really neat little Chateau with a grand history. It's humble beginnings belie the fact that it eventually was the home of Louis IV's second "secret" wife. It also has the ruins of an aquaduct meant to carry water to power all of Versailles fountains. It is definitely worth a stop and a stroll through the house and... More

Well, I will start with Trip Advisor. The Chateau is in Maintenon and your saying it is Chartres, while perhaps technically correct in some respect, is confusing to those who know that it is in Maintenon and quite some distance from the Loire. That said, on to the review. We do not normally review "attractions" in Paris and its environs... More

By far one of my most favourite places in France. We did a day trip by train and went to Chartres first, and then stopped at Maintenon to see the chateau on the way back. There is virtually no crowd. The gardens are perfect for that spring/summer picnic under the trees alongside the waterway at the Chateau, with the aqueduct... More

This chateau is not far from Chartres. It once belonged to the "secret" second wife of Louis XIV. It is easy to see why in his old age the Sun King tired of the hubbub of Versailles and came to this peaceful home as an occasional refuge. He also hatched a grandiose plan, not quite completed, to build Roman-style aqueducts... More

The host at our B&B in Chartres recommended we tour this Chateau. We arrived right when it opened on a Sunday morning and found free parking adjacent to the Chateau (Sunday parking is at no charge). This Chateau was the home of the Sun King's nanny (and mistress). The Chateau is small enough to tour in a morning or afternoon... More

Maintenon is a beautiful, small castle in Chartres vincinity. Easy access by car (and by train too, if you don´t mind to walk a good 20 minutes), has a magnificent story. It was the home of the former nanny, mistress, than wife of King Louis XiV, "le Roi Soleil", the Sun King. Interesting woman, beautiful garden, lake, arches and a... More

Modest in size but not in quality. Beautiful well kept grounds. Friendly and homely atmosphere. Information about the aqueduct very informative. Quite a project in current days let alone when it was commissioned. Well worth the entry price.

The Chateau de Maintenon is definitely not the Versailles. But its haunting charm is its diminutive dimension. Indeed, the saying "Big suprises comes in small packages" can never be truer in Maintenon. The male chateau guide has been most helpful in imparting to our group, a combinations of Filipino and Korean dance artists, the history of the place and introduce... More

I was really looking forward to visiting the Chateau de Maintenon, but I left there very disappointed. The gardens were gorgeous, but 3/4 of them were closed off to the public and turned into a golf course. The part that was open only had 2 benches to sit on. The Chateau itself only takes about an hour to visit. I... More

If you are visiting Chartres then you can easily drive to Maintenon. This might not be a very well known château or as big as some of the others, but it really merits a detour. A huge plus is that you avoid virtually all crowds like on the main tourist circuit. I have lived in the Paris region for 18... More
