There was something rather different about the atmosphere in this church compared to many other churches and cathedrals I have visited in France. The plainness of the interior filled with light gives it the feeling of almost not being a church until you go into the crypt to see the relics and then suddenly you feel as if you are... More

The cathedral is the jewel at the top of the village. It was restored by Viollet le Duc who also restored Notre Dame in Paris. St Madeleine is not that impressive in itself, but it sits in perfect harmony with the rest of the village and the spectacular views over the surrounding valleys. For a bit of extra ambiance, try... worth a trip to Vezelay to see this cathedral. The alternating colors of stone in the arches create a striking pattern very reminiscent of Byzantium.

We visited Vezelay whilst doing a trip on the Nivernais canal. The tourist office at Chatel Censoir booked a taxi to take us on the 20 minute trip, kindly dropping us off outside the basilica. It is well worth visiting. The basilica is an excellent example of Romanesque architecture, large and spacious with a light airy feel about it. Visit... More

Visited Vezelay in Burgundy which the guide books boast is the most beautiful village in France. It isn't, but it is definitely in the top 20 and well worth a 3-5 hour visit. The village signs encourage tourists to park in the plentiful car park spaces (€3 a day) at the bottom of the village. Be aware though that the... More

This wonderful church sits on a hill atop the charming town of Vezelay. It has much historic importance in the time of the crusades. There are no stained glass windows to distract so I spent my time admiring the wonderful, intricate sculptures atop the pillars, relating biblical scenes with an emphasis on the morbid. The church has beautiful proportions and... More

We visited this imposing Romanesque basilica on a cold but brilliantly sunny day in February and were entirely on our own as we made our way upwards through the attractive winding streets of medieval Vezelay. Situated at the very top of the only hill in town, the size and scale of the building particularly impress and we had gasped at... More

This place is a UNESCO World Heritage site and you soon see why. An unspoilt medieval abbey church towers high above this tourist honeypot with stunning views across the surrounding countryside, not least the surrounding countryside. Can be a little too much at weekends when the place is packed to the rafters, so best to visit in the evening when... More

This is one of the greatest romanesque buildings that you can visit. It is so atmospheric. You start with the magnificent carving of the tympanum as you enter, followed by the pure beauty of the space as you enter the nave. The basilica is perched on top of a hill and is quite a site as you approach the village of...
