We just returned from France where we visited Paris, the Dordogne and Epernay. We decided that we would like to see Font de Gaume and so we took an early am train from Paris to Souillac. We hitched a cab and went to Sarlat where we rented a car. We thoroughly enjoyed the Dordogne region. We saw several chateaus such... more

The Font de Gaume was the highlight of our stay in the Dordogne and a great way to end our holiday. The English tour guide was excellent and his enthuiasm for the caves soon spread throughout the group. It was amazing to see 25,000 year old paintings and engravings in their original setting and imagine all of the hundreds of... more

There is nothing more amazing than seeing these real cave paintings. There is talk that this cave will be closed within the next couple of years so we decided we had to do this and saved Lascaux for our next trip. The guide was extremely knowledgeable and made the viewing even more interesting. Highly recommend! more

I have been to Font de Gaume numerous times, and each time I have entered the cave, I feel a rush excitement. I love the Prehistoric sites in the Vezere Valley, but none of them give me the feeling like Font de Gaume does.. Font de Gaume actually takes you to the original cave paintings / art, you can sense... more

This cave is one of the few decorated caves remaining open to the public. Paintings by early homo sapiens decorate this cave lavishly. The guides are almost reverent about the 15,000 year old art. The State is also very careful to limit the visitation to 170 persons per day--an amount studies showed to be sustainable given the natural (and assisted)... more

Font de Gaume is simply an astonishing place. It's really hard to wrap one's head around the thousands of years that have passed since someone stood there with a hollow reed and some powdered mineral pigments, and painted the walls with animals that seem to move. (Same as with the trog cave dwellings -- looking down over the Vezere river... more

Font de Gaume was the highlight of our trip to southern France a few years ago. We drove three hours from Gascony to see Font de Gaume and Lascaux (and three hours back), and even with that drive our visit was still the high point of the trip. Font de Gaume is such a marvel because its paintings are the... more
