Coming from Lancaster you are soon in the wilds and although the trees are fewer than years ago when i came as a kid , it's still breathtaking..... the stream still flows as it always did and you can paddle in a few spots ... you can walk ..for miles or just sit and enjoy the countryside......theres a caravan on... THE most gorgeous, picture perfect countryside....yes, I know, British countryside nationwide is lovely, but there is something special about the Trough of Bowland...could it be greener? or those rock walls just seem more perfectly set? or the lambs more joyous? All of those and more. The hills, pastures, streams & rivers, wildlife or rural Lancashire are overlooked in most travel... More

We are new the north-west, but our house is near enough to the Lake District and the Trough of Bowland to be able to get to either location in a 45-minute drive. The Forest of Bowland/Trough of Bowland is a beautiful area - we love it because once you get walking, it feels very remote and you don't meet loads... More

There isn't as much forest as years ago, but it can be found. The trough is a pristine rural heaven comprising wild fell, babbling streams & rivers, lush meadowland, ancient woodlands all doted with picturesque villages and hamlet and hosting some of the best food and drink in the country. Yes I'm biased: I grew up on its southern edge,... More

It is one of the most beautiful landscapes I have ever met. Small farms with grazing sheep, pheasants flying and pecking in the grass, rabbits running .... It seems the idyllic landscapes that we imagine in fairy tales.

Traveling from Cumbria to East Lancs, we often cut through this way for the scenic drive and get off the motorway. Lots of places to stop and have a walk if you want too.

Easy to get to but not many people try. A cyclists haven where you don't see much traffic. Lots of village pubs, walks and a chance to get away from it all.
