We went in the mid-week and took our friends from Wales, just to show them the Lancashire hillside. We visited Dunsop bridge and stopped for a picnic. There is plenty of car carking and public toilets there. A nice walking area and the river with grass and hungry ducks-so take some bread if you visit. There is an ice cream... More

This is a beatiful scenic area not far from Lancaster, with many wonderful views, small valleys and rolling hills, mainly open but with some trees in the main valley. It is picturesque at any time of the year or whatever the weather as it takes on different characters according to the light. Be sure to take your walking boots and... More

We wanted to a enjoy a bit more holiday on the way back home from a stay at Thurnham Hall (Lancaster). So instead of racing round the motorways to Boundary Mill, Colne for retail therapy, we took the scenic route over the hills and through the Trough of Bowland. The track is single lane in places with care needed where... More

Someone told us that The Trough of Bowland is the Queen's favourite area, and you can quite see why. It's so English - rolling countryside, high hedges full of wild flowers and blossom, small fields and not a polytunnel in sight (it's dairy and sheep farming rather than arable, which certainly ups the picturesque quotient). Lots of little artists' studios,... More

Firstly, if this was a review simply for the Trough of Bowland I would give it an excellent rating for the feeling of wilderness and beauty. However, I wanted to review Gisburn Forest Hub which is situated not far from Slaidburn. As a Forestry Commission area I thought it was mainly for walkers but in fact it is for cyclists,... More

The drive through the Trough of Bowland is one of the best scenic drives you can have. The countryside is stunning. The roads are not for the fainthearted as there are steep drops and narrow roads, but if you enjoy taking the car for a run over that sort of terrain you will not be disappointed. The there plenty of... More
