This is a beautiful, quiet, unspoilt area of the country that people drive past on their way to the Lakes without stopping.

The Trough of Bowland is significant because it's the pass through the watershed between the rivers Hodder and Marshaw Wyre. It's surrounded by a scenic upland area that's been known as the Forest of Bowland for hundreds of years. Although there used to be many more trees, a forest in this sense was a royal hunting ground rather than a... More

A favourite trip out from Blackpool, it can be reached in 30 minutes and is completely free. The scenery is magnificent and there are many great picnic places, where kids of allages can splash safely in the stream which runs almost all the way along the road. There is nowhere at all to buy stuff, so stock up or recover... More

This is a really dramatic landscape. A spate river running at the bottom of this splendid valley, created by high moorland rising on either side. A fine place for a picnic. If you're fit, you can walk up into the moorland and see red grouse, lapwing and golden plover - the ground-nesting birds protected by predator control by the various... More

The Trough of Bowland, or to give it the proper title, Forest of Bowland, is an area of outstanding beauty in Lancashire. Popular in summer months with families for picnics, walking, and with photographers who like to observe the wild life. An abundance of birds of many breeds and sizes, and water animals such as otters and ducks, swans, and... More

Roads over the trough are great for bikers just watch out for errant sheep and car drivers great little cafe by side of road about half way over from Lancaster and a nice stream to sit by on hot summer days. Ideal place to take children to safely splash about in the stream

OK the views can be stunning but seriously there is a real lack of wildlife here. There are crows and we did see one lestrel but other than red grouse there seems to be nothing, no rabbits, foxes, badgers, deer or even many small birds. One has to ask what is going on - it certainly isn't natural and limits... More

It's always a pleasure to drive through the lovely scenic Trough of Bowland, especially on a nice day!! At all times of the year it's a lovely day and nice to see the change in seasons!! It's always nice to find a country pub or restaurant on your day out too!!
