Tucked out of the way - a gem

Easy to get to but not many people try. A cyclists haven where you don't see much traffic. Lots of village pubs, walks and a chance to get away from it all.

It's been a few years since we drove over the route so our weekend drive was to include this scenic shortcut from West Yorkshire to Lancaster with an extra early start to beat the traffic. Starting at Long Preston via Slaidburn and Dunsop Bridge (refreshment opportunities at both places) we were soon enjoying the scenery with the Yorkshire Dales Three... More

I regularly cycle through the Bowland area and can say that it provides the some of the best roads in the UK, they are congestion free and in good condition, unlike the Lakes, the descents are long and not too steep so provide a safer feeling. The scenery is unrivaled, beautiful fell land, woodlands and views make Bowland a place... More

I live in the area and love nothing better than driving over the trough. Beautiful scenery lots of walks and fresh air. It is great when there is snow on the ground crossing from Slaidburn to Bentham, providing you have 4x4. Summer walks have spectacular views.

The trough covers a huge area of absolutely brilliant and scenic countryside. The drives are great, the villages delightful and the walks superb. Our only hope is that it doesn't get too popular and become spoilt.

This isn't a visitor attraction it is an area, it lacks a lot of facilities - we really had problems finding a petrol station. There are a couple of nice cafes and pubs but they should be rated on their own merit. Ok the scenery is nice but when you are desperate for a loo there are not that many... More

Beautiful area of natural beauty, with some bracing walks and fantastic views. Dotted with some excellent hotels and pubs and easily accessible from the M6.

We did this lovely scenic drive as a detour whilst returning from Edinburgh to Birmingham via the M6. You pass thorough some wonderful british countryside. It took about 2.5 hours including a lazy lunch stop at the Inn at Whitewell (recommended) Parts of it was single lane with passing places, but road surface was excellent, and felt safe albeit a...
