We are new the north-west, but our house is near enough to the Lake District and the Trough of Bowland to be able to get to either location in a 45-minute drive. The Forest of Bowland/Trough of Bowland is a beautiful area - we love it because once you get walking, it feels very remote and you don't meet loads... More

There isn't as much forest as years ago, but it can be found. The trough is a pristine rural heaven comprising wild fell, babbling streams & rivers, lush meadowland, ancient woodlands all doted with picturesque villages and hamlet and hosting some of the best food and drink in the country. Yes I'm biased: I grew up on its southern edge,... More

It is one of the most beautiful landscapes I have ever met. Small farms with grazing sheep, pheasants flying and pecking in the grass, rabbits running .... It seems the idyllic landscapes that we imagine in fairy tales.

Traveling from Cumbria to East Lancs, we often cut through this way for the scenic drive and get off the motorway. Lots of places to stop and have a walk if you want too.

Easy to get to but not many people try. A cyclists haven where you don't see much traffic. Lots of village pubs, walks and a chance to get away from it all.

It's been a few years since we drove over the route so our weekend drive was to include this scenic shortcut from West Yorkshire to Lancaster with an extra early start to beat the traffic. Starting at Long Preston via Slaidburn and Dunsop Bridge (refreshment opportunities at both places) we were soon enjoying the scenery with the Yorkshire Dales Three... More

I regularly cycle through the Bowland area and can say that it provides the some of the best roads in the UK, they are congestion free and in good condition, unlike the Lakes, the descents are long and not too steep so provide a safer feeling. The scenery is unrivaled, beautiful fell land, woodlands and views make Bowland a place... More

I live in the area and love nothing better than driving over the trough. Beautiful scenery lots of walks and fresh air. It is great when there is snow on the ground crossing from Slaidburn to Bentham, providing you have 4x4. Summer walks have spectacular views.
