Type: Farms, Sights & Landmarks
Owner description: You probably know us as a lovely place for children to see the animals, run around in beautiful countryside and let off steam in our state-of-the-art play barn - but there's a lot more to Sacrewell. With the help of £1.4 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund, our 18th century water mill is being transformed into a national centre for milling excellence - take a tour and find out how your great-grandparents got their daily bread. Foodies can also join a tractor trip around the fields of our tenant farmers Riverford Organic Farms (it's on our land). Then there's our wildlife trail, scavenger hunt and two new rambles - if you're lucky, you'll see the rare red kites and brown hares. Seasonal events range from our Lamb National to ploughing with vintage tractors. You can even meet a film star - some of our shires appeared in War Horse. In our 50th year as a charity dedicated to agricultural education, we continue to welcome students of all ages who want to learn traditional skills and get an insight into rural life. We hope that all our visitors not only have a great day out but feel they've learned something too.

We visited here en route from Cheshire to Norfolk, stopping for a bite to eat mid-way. Pleasantly surprised by the menu choices available; we chose leek & potato soup served with warm ciabatta, beef stroganoff with pepper rice, and pasta with meatballs. The food quality was excellent, nice surroundings and great service.

We visited twice in February with Grandchildren aged 7 and 5 and there was so much for them to see and do They fed the animals (plenty of hot water hand washing facilities). Loved the shire horses and pigs played pooh sticks at the bridge. Walked up to the mill pond to see the ducks and geese unfortunatly the mill... More

We were looking for somewhere to meet up with family that had something of interest for a 4 and 5 yr old. Sacrewell Farm and Barn sounded the perfect place. Sadly we were very disappointed when we saw the outside play area, which was very poorly equipped and on the day we went we only saw a few animals..a few... More

We always visit Sacrewell with our two young children (age 6 and 8) whenever we are in the Peterborough area, which is maybe once or twice a year. I wonder if we visited the same place given the other recent reviews, especially in relation to the animals? We saw Shire horses, donkeys, peacocks, chicks, quail, sheep, piglets, lambs....etc. Enough to... More

A enjoyable visit, but very busy. Graet for children 2-8. Not that much for the older ones. There is a nice cafe for a cake and coffee.

Went here during term time- so it was very quiet. There were no staff about. I thought we would give it a try once more as they had rebranded and put in a big new playbarn. On The plus side the playbarn was great and I would definitely revisit that if like most play barns you just pay for child... More

Thank you for your feedback. Unlike Pigeons Farm, Sacrewell is a charitable trust and heritage site, not a children's farm park. Although we do have attractions for children, including our Playbarn and small animal village, our livestock numbers remain constant, but fluctuate in the spring with rare-breed lambs and piglets among our stock. These animals are sent to market in... More

I haven't visited for a few years and was shocked. The farm trust was supposed to be to show rural life as it was. The animals were few and pitiful. An awful big play barn has shot up, which was obviously what the farm now relies on to bring visitors in. Also play machines and electric toy car track. Fine... More

Hi Louise, Thank you for your feedback. The aim of the William Scott Abbott Trust is to teach people about food and farming and has never been a nostalgia attraction. Obviously, the 18th century watermill when it had reopened in the summer will greatly add to our educational facilities, allowing us to mill flour and bake our own bread. We... More

There really isn't much to see here. Hardly any animals and the tractor ride for a £1 is a rip off. The indoor play barn is an improvement but needs a good dust. Far more to do and see at Pidgeon Farm up the road.

The history of the farm, the watermill, what the charity is doing to keep the farm moving with the times and to make it sustainable. The way that young children are encouraged to engage with their surroundings.

We come here probably about twice yearly. Last time we came, we participated in the sheep races.....brilliant fun and very addictive! Lots for my little nephews to look at and even my 13 and 10 year olds still enjoyed it. There's a fabulous brand new soft play barn with its own separate cafe and lots of picnic tables (indoors) to... More

Hi Lucie, Thank you for your lovely review. We're doing lamb and kid feeding shows this year, so don't forget to come along in the spring to visit us and see our new children's mascot (I have a feeling he'll be a hit with your children). Megan More
