I love to hill walk and Knocknarea never disappoints. I have walked this hill by myself and with a small group of special people. It is an easy walk up if you are fit. In fact, it would be a good challenge to run it (just be cautious of the rocky sections). The views are incredible: the tomb, the Sligo... More

We rode to the top on horseback--I would not want to walk that hill, it is not for the faint at heart or unfit. Lovely views, excellent piece of history. More

Just west of Sligo town stands the iconic hill of Knocknarea. Known as the burial place of Maeve (the warrior queen of Connacht) the cairn atop the hill is thought to be a Neolithic passage tomb. As local legend goes a curse will fall on any who disturb the tomb which remains unexcavated to this day. You will see Knocknarea... More

Give yourself 45 minutes at least to climb from the car park. When you get to the top the views are worth the climb. Bt at least it's much easier coming down. More

Unrivalled views of the locality; easy to get to and not far from Strandhill village. The Mythology of the area and Queen Medbs grave is superb and ties in with a Mythological tour i took of the Knocknarea/Strandhill peninsula. More

A half hour walk starting on a gentle pebbly pathway, can be wet as the water runs down from the mountain, so wear good grippy shoes...I've seen a few girls wear high heels and others wear their favourite white trainers..wear shoes you don't mind getting dirty. After the gate it turns to grass, then the steepish slope for about 10... More

Gorgeous, healthy hike (~1.5 miles and 1000 ft elevation, 2.5 hrs roundtrip) that rewards you at the top with an impressive 20 ft. tall rock cairn burial grounds of the ancient Queen Maive and a spectacular view of the entire Sligo area. To the east of the peak is a ancient grave that was robbed centuries ago. We are in... More

We did the climb up the Knocknarea this morning Getting to the car park at the base is fairly easy as it is well signposted from Sligo town centre You'll need good boots for the climb up.The first 10 minutes are up a narrow gravel path. Then you come up to a small swivel gate which heralds the steepest portion... More
