This was a surprise. Heapstown Cairn is really in a field behind a home. It is a hidden gem and our group had it to ourselves the entire time we were there. Trees, herbs and cairns. I highly recommend a stop here.

Heapstown cairn is located near the village of Castlebaldwin in Co Sligo which is located on the main Sligo - Dublin Road. The cairn itself is deemed to be a passage grave. A mound of stones at least 6 meters high covers the passage grave which is about 60 meters in diameter. It is indeed a very impressive megalithic site

Unlike both Newgrange and Knoth, Heapstown has never been excavated. Often the larger cairns were used to house the tribal leaders.

Heapstown Cairn is located on a side-road off the main Sligo - Dublin Road near Castlebaldwin. It's around 20 foot high and quite broad at the base. It is deemed to be an unexplored passage grave from the Megalithic Era. It is very impressive and well worth the minor detour
