While among the oldest, Carrowmore, located near Sligo, is the largest megalithic (Stone Age) cemetery in Ireland. Self-explanatory displays in the visitors' center offer clues to boost one's appreciation of the depth of knowledge of our ancestors -- evident from the remains of these wondrous constructions, born of human observation, primitive technology, and a desire to understand their world, their... But to fully enjoy it, you'd better take the guided tour. The guide talks and talks and answer all your questions. The place is quite windy, wear something warm !

This monument is a neolithicphile's dream come true. Lot's of different kinds and styles of graves dating to 3000 B. C. You can walk around the grounds at your own leisure. The staff was friendly. The restrooms were clean. There is a modest admission fee, but it is well worth it.

Interesting and fascinating to a point but if you're not that into history then it's just rocks in a field. I'd definitely not recommend taking kids as I think they'd find it mind numbing. The exhibition at the start is decent but there's not much else once your out on the field.

While the welcome at the entrance house was very pleasant, and the little exhibit quite interesting, these magalithic rocks failed to move me in the same way those in Brittany, in particular near Carnac, did. The endless downpour might however have contributed to my lack of awe...:-(

This is exactly what you would expect, really old rocks stacked on each other in a field. It's unbelievable to think how long they've been there & the history around them. However, if you aren't into the historical aspect, I wouldn't go out of your way to make this stop with all there is to see in Ireland.

Newgrange in County Meath (or Bru na Boinne) gets a lot of attention (as it should) but Carrowmore is actually quite a bit older in origin than Newgrange. The "map" that they rent to you at the visitor's center isn't all that easy to read and a lot of times the tombs will be in an adjoining pasture, so viewing... More

Carrowmore is fascinating with about 60 tombs with a timeline between 3500 - 4000 BC. Spread over about 70 acres the site is easy to walk around. Don't forget to walk down the adjoining road to see the stone circles that are in farmland (private property) but easily viewed over the fence.

Interesting visitor centre to wander through before going out into the fields. Again, take the guided tour to get the most out of your visit. Our guide, Jean, was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about her homeland and brought the stones to life almost.

We have been to Carrowmore several times, and we certainly loved the walk through a vast number of tombs (always, it seems, in one of the windiest and rain-prone area of Ireland.) This certainly should be on the list of places to visit, but we were disappointed that informational signs were scant. Access to the facility was wonderful, but no... More
