As of May 24, 2014 this place is still temporarily closed for renovations. They say it will be open in the spring of 2014 - but just not yet. (the 1 star is just because I have to do something, I have no actual star rating).

My understanding is this ancient brewery has been purchased by Diageo which is the same company that owns Guinness and they are moving the production of Smithwick's and Killkenny up to the St. James Gate brewery in Dublin. I hope that they keep the original brewery in Killkenny open for tours at least even if it is no longer brewing... More

We were very happy to have scheduled a tour when we found out that the brewery would be moving. I've done many brewery tours and found this one to be thorough--interesting, historical, educational, and delicious. Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly and one just can't beat walking around the original abbey. I especially enjoyed getting to go in the pro's... More

We signed up for a tour about 3 hours ahead of time - we wandered around Kilkenny until it was time. A group of us were led by 2 twenty-something girls who showed us the original Abbey where the Monks originally lived and starting making the beer. They told us the water from Kilkenny was the secret to the great... More

Since Smithwick's is my husband's favorite Irish beer, we had to do this tour. Word of advice, tours fill up quickly, so it is best to schedule a day or so ahead of time (at least). Fantastic tour. The guide has worked there for something like 30 years and is very knowledgeable. The history of this brewery is interesting. The... More

Rocked up to the brewery and unfortunately it is closed until spring 2014. Hopefully people see this before they go there and see the sign on the door.

I was very impressed by the staff, who as I was driving up from Dublin, emailed on my cell phone to see if they could accommodate 2 guests and luckily we got in. There were only three more days to go before they closed and relocate to Dublin and it was definitely worth the drive up. It was a very... More

We really enjoyed this tour. It was very personal and a little sad. The Smithwick Brewery is being closed and merged with the Guinness Brewery in Dublin. The explanation of the history of Ireland's oldest brewery and how it came about is very interesting. The tour guide was very engaging. We toured multiple buildings and of course at the end... More

The guide from our tour - a former employee was great - he had such a passion about the entire brewery that was very obvious throughout his presentation. The Brewery was very interesting & we learned a lot about brewing beer.

We made our reservation for here months in advance so we would be guaranteed a spot at the time we wanted. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable being a retired taster ( man wouldn't that have been an awesome job!) and took us to the old church they would congregate in the morning to pray for beer, on to the...
