We visited Kilkenny Castle after seeing the Rock of Cashel. Terrific juxtaposition to see what true medieval conditions (even if it's the ruins) to how it could be restored to modern living. The audiovisual presentation provided a very useful historical context. Had a Downton Abbey quality as you learned more about the Butler family. Great that the huge grounds are...

The audio visual presentation helped to place the castle in its historical perspective. The grounds are beautifully manicured and the rooms grand. Part of the castle is now used for conferences, but there was still quite enough to see. In the portrait gallery take care not to miss the painted structures supporting the ceiling.
We actually enjoyed our visit to this castle. There is nothing that makes it really stand out, but it was enjoyable nontheless.
We arrived about 30 minutes after opening time. Bought tickets, and commenced to guiding ourselves through the castle. We were provided a map, which was very self explanatory.
This house is very similar to chateaus of France. The...

While the entrance has all the looks of a castle, don’t go expecting to see a fortified castle throughout. Kilkenny is a nice castle and a limited portion of the castle is open to public viewing (as is the case in most castles). The castle rooms have been renovated throughout the years transforming Kilkenny from a defensive structure to a "home." There is a nice "picture gallery" that occupies an entire wing with exquisite portraits lining it's walls. The...

Beautiful grounds and the inside was beautifully restored. The entry price was reasonable, we were allowed to peruse at our leisure with a map so it suited us perfectly. Worth a visit.
The Castle was within walking distance from our hotel, lots of pubs along the way, or you could stop in at a nice restauant for lunch.
It's a Heritage property so we could use our card again which is nice.
The castle is nice, they have spent time and money to keep it up, it's a self touring castle but information was abundant.
It's worth a visit. In some of the rooms they have a person that acts as a guard or overseer and they are...

I last did the Kilkenny Castle tour in the mid 1990's.
We did it again in Sept 2012 when we were on holidays in Ireland.
The castle had changed a lot in the meantime with good quality renovations. There are many more rooms open these days.
Its a great tour, done at your own pace, with enough things to read...
