You truly capture a sense of the hidden Ireland when you accidentally stumble upon The Stag’s Head. Finding it is akin to discovering a rare treasure as it is concealed through a narrow passageway off Dame Street, although access can also be gained through Exchequer Street or Georges Street. When you enter inside this feeling of discovered booty is greatly intensified as a virtual paradise of culture and old world values confronts you. This is probably Dublin’s best preserved Victorian pub - and everything here is of authentic Victorian origin. Take time to look around and savour the sumptuously carved Victorian mahogany fittings, the mosaic marble tiled floors and granite tabletops. Visiting the Stag’s Head is a wondrous experience wether you call when the premises is cosy, warm and glowing at night time, or in early morning when this is old repository of liquid culture is radiantly illuminated by wafts of sunlight filtering through the stained glass windows. The mahogany bar, capped with red Connemara marble, follows the classic Victorian architectural pattern, being long and punctuated by exquisite partitions that divide into private compartments or stalls. « less

My friend and I loved the Stag's Head so much that we went back 3 times in as many days. We visited other bars, of course, but the Stag's Head felt the most comfortable to us. The bartenders are great (not sure of their REAL names but Irish Michael Bolton and Gingy know who they are), and they even started... More

Great service for a busy Friday. The drink service was prompt, and our waiter was accommodating and entertaining. He did a really excellent job. He arranged for a special preparation of one of the menu items per our request. Excellent lamb shanks. He advised us on a special selection of whiskies to sample. Each was an excellent choice. The highlight... More

The Stags was always a pillar of Dublin pubs but alas no longer. It seemed to have ownership or management in the past 5 years and it has gone hill. The real character has gone and the it's now an expensive place to drink focused on the tourist dollar and just making a buck. It's a real shame to see... More

It is a very lovely place, where I stopped by for a quick lunch. I got one of the best soup ever. Chunky chips were very good too. Place is lovely, atmosphere great, and service very good. Recomended!!

I was on the green bus tour of dublin and decided to get off near Temple Bar. I asked the friendly driver (these guys appear to know everything) for a traditional pub to have a pint of ireland's best. He instructed me to walk up a lane way and it would be there - his parting words......probably hasn't changed much... More

My wife and I went there for lunch in our day in Dublin, and we absolutely loved it! Friendly service and great food and beers. Highly recommend the Steak and Guinness Casserole.

Always visit pub , during visits to Dublin. Beer is always good, and they have a fantastic selection of Irish Whiskey, and staff are knowledgable about Whiskey. Pub is very old, and has great atmosphere and friendly staff. Would definitely recommend popping in for beers and Great Irish Whiskey. They recently filmed part of Penny Dreadful in this pub ,... I called in to the stags head one afternoon. I asked for a glass of water, to which the barman, ruarieyeye told me to 'get the boat' this confused me as I had taken a 'dublin bike' to the establishment. He then went on to hurl abuse at my hair and choice of clothing. I noticed he was wearing a... More

We went to this pub several nights during a 5 night stay. Bartender's were friendly and very helpful. On Monday's they have free comedy in the basement starting at 9. Get there early to reserve a seat. Four comedians performed and were all very funny! We didn't eat there but the food looked good as well. I highly recommend going... More

I visited a few pubs while I was in Dublin and the Guinness here was the best that I tried in any of those pubs. I really liked the chowder too. I'm not sure why people think it is overpriced- it was about the same price as every other pub I went to give or take 10 cents. It is... More
