A firm favourite with my son who needs to visit this every year for the peat fire. The staff are always friendly and a wealth of information. Everything is well presented in an accessible way for children and adults. There are lots of thing for children to touch.

Don't get me wrong, the history is fascinating but the smell of smouldering peat sent me running for the door.

very interesting informative and interesting. The dvd(2) are really good explianing the Harris Tweed and the peat cutting and both just long enough. The lady who took the talk in the first house was very entertaining, informative and knowledgeable - a great visit and all for a token £3 !

Apparently this place was actually lived in until 1962 - which, if you believe the story, means that the peat fire in it's central hearth (in tradition you don't let the fire go out), has been burning for nearly 1000 years... Such a unique place; unbelievably well preserved and maintained; well worth the few pounds it cost to enter. I'd... More

Though I have never personally been to any of the black houses, I have read about them In Dr. Weston A Price's (a dentist) 1939 Nutrition and Physical Degeneration. In the early 20th century he was dismayed over the poor dental health of his many patients, so rather than study pathology, he took the the common sense approach as to... More

The blackhouse is an incredible experience. The house fills with the reek of peatsmoke and is very cosy. It is easy to imagine a family living inside with their livestock. You can visit the moreupdated house as well to compare how family life changed over half a century but was still simple and pleasing but hard.

Visited in 2011 and enjoyed immensely. Lots of things to see and do and it gives you a good feel of how the islanders lived. There was also a working loom and support on hand for the less understanding. Cafe on site was also excellent. Give it a try.

Great insight into past lives. And great views. I think you can actually rent some of them too. Good parking and reasonable access down a few steps.
