Have been several times (gift aid entry fee and get free year pass, plus kids free) and love it every time. Ipod's for personal tours are very good but you cannot beat the guided tours by former-miners. Do the "big stuff tour" if it's available, well worth the time spent. Kids (8, 4 as 2) always find it interesting, and... More

The Mining Museum isn't something I thought I would enjoy, but having been there today, I enjoyed every minute and the guided tour is what makes it!! The guides are ex miners, and their knowledge and experience is amazing an heart felt! Ask them anything and everything!! I could have cried reading some of the exhibition!! Also can experience extra... More

More than just a museum, definitely do the tour hosted by an ex-miner (but make sure you bring a warm jumper!). More interesting than I expected to be honest! I was there a good 3 hours so it's worth the not-too-long-trip, especially as you can go on the local bus through some lovely countryside. I would really recommend it to... More

We really enjoyed our visit. A family with two young boys, we found the exhibitions rich and interesting with good exhibits and the boys liked the models which move and light up. Lots of great information not only about the the technology and the mines themselves but also about the people involved over time in Scottish mining industry. The guided... More

The quality of this tour depends ENTIRELY if you get a guided tour or use the audio guide. The audio guide is OK, but the real live guide is AWESOME. I think they only do the live guides on Wednesdays and Sundays (we went Sunday afternoon). Make sure you check this out. The guides are old men who were actually... More

Hi there, thanks for the kind words! I just wanted to let you know that our guided tours do run regularly every day. The Wednesday/Sunday one you refer to is our Big Stuff tour which focuses specifically on the big machinery contained in one of our old workshops. As an aside, we're also working on replacing our audio guides as... More

This place is a real eye-opener into the working lives of miners. I always appreciated how hard their job was but this attraction really makes you think hard about what it was like for them. The tour of the mining works is an absolute must see!! The knowledge of the guide (Tom - I think) couldn't have been more extensive... More

This place is a little out of the way - but easy to get to via Lothian Bus lines. Very nice tour and especially interesting exhibits. I learned a lot about coal mining and the social aspects of rula Scotland in the early/mid 20th century. Very nice that some of the tour guides worked the mines years ago! Would be... More

Was not sure about going here, we hummed and hawed about it for some time as to whether it would be worth the money and if the kids would enjoy it. Well we went and had one of the best family days out so far, lots to see and do, optional tours, very interactive, great cafe and gift shop and... More
