As a Celiac traveling the Highlands alone, I was concerned about my options when I booked the all day trip to Skye with John. He was able to point out several places for me to eat in Portree, and even carried his own GF snacks. John was an incredible guide; the pace of the tour and his knowledge of the... More

My friend and I booked the Isle of Skye Explorer tour and created our own private Highlands tour with John and we had the best time! John is an incredible guide - he is knowledgeable, friendly and was very attentive to our needs on both of our tours. Plus he didn't mind all the silly photos we wanted to take!... More

John was an amazing guide and source of knowledge. We had many, many, questions for John and he was able to answer them all and expand on what we were asking about. He studies Scots history when not toring to learn even more. I speaking of deep studies here, not just an odd course. We went to the highlands and... More

Exellent tour with stunning places, moods and views. Familiar, friendly and skilled guidance from beginning to end. This was our second trip with John, and his knowledge of the past and the present of the islands is really impressive, we are really looking forward to have our third one with him.

My mother and I chose the MacRae Clan one-day tour and had the best day of our entire trip. We got lucky with the weather - a perfect blue sky day in November! John is a fantastic guide, happy to answer any questions and discuss any topic. He sat my Mum up front and outlined our schedule right from the... More

Last month my wife and I had a wonderful 10-hour Isle of Skye Adventure Tour with our guide, John MacDonald. While the trip highlighted the Eilean Donan Castle and the southern Skye village of Portree, the best parts were the efforts of the guide himself. His detailed knowledge of the clans, the history and geography of the region and his... More

My husband wanted to see the Isle of Skye, and he had particular places he wanted to see. After doing some research, and the great reviews of John MacDonald and Hebridean Explorer tours, he booked us on a day tour. John picked us up at 8:00 at our Inverness hotel and our first stop was my request...to see some hairy... More

I booked this tour for mid October, knowing that I may be pushing my luck with the weather. However, we had fantastic weather! We usually book the bigger bus tours (12 - 18 people), and had taken a tour from Edinburgh to Loch Ness a year ago. The Hebridean tour is a private tour, which costs more, but the value... More

My husband and I, both in our seventies, toured Skye with John Macdonald in September as Scotland prepared to vote on the referendum for Scottish independence. We approached John with an ambitious list of places we wanted to see: the Red and Black Cuillins, Kilt Rock, the Old Man of Storr, the Quiraing, the crofts at Staffin, Dunvegan Castle, the... More

We feel so fortunate to have spent a gorgeous day in the Western Highlands with John. His deep knowledge of the region's history, geology, and languages made the trip fun and fascinating. We so appreciated his professionalism, flexibility, sense of humor and constant attention; he made sure that we got the most out of our time with him. He picked... More
