Owner description: Hidden in the forest of Rothiemurchus, this beautiful place is one of the most loved in the UK. Loch an Eilein (loch of the island) with its 13th century island castle, was voted Britain's Best Picnic Spot as part of the celebrations to highlight the 10th anniversary of Warburtons National Bread Week which took place in May 2010 - a big thank you to everyone who voted. Step back in time and retrace the steps of the Highland cattle raiders as you enjoy views of the dramatic and mysterious Highland castle and enjoy the exceptional wildlife of the forest including Red Squirrels and Scottish Crossbills. You can enjoy some of the best low level walking in Scotland. Sheltered by ancient pine trees with views of the mountains, the path round the loch is suitable for motorised wheel chairs, off road buggies and is part of the 50km Rothiemurchus way marked network of paths.

This is a lovely loch to walk around early morning or after your evening meal. Its peaceful and very beautiful. If you are there early or late the chap charging you £4.50 is not usually there, personally i think thats a bit much to charge unless you are staying all day.

Beautiful wander around the loch - great history - great photographic opportunities. Parking is a bit naughty charging per person in the car which came to about £4.50, then has the nerve to issue vouchers to say we got a person free entry. If it's for the up keep of the area then fine, it's worth it.

The walk/cycle around the loch is just perfect, the terrain is ideal for young kids on bikes with one or two spots to get off and push. Loads of places to go and adventure and great for dads to make up stories of pirates and crocs, not to mention making swords and spears (just in case!).

Lovely walk round the Loch - some 3miles and about 2 hours. There is a small gallery/shop on site, and a reasonable car park for which a daily charge is made. This has been apparently nominated the most beautiful picnic site in the UK - we have seen many similar, but that is not to detract from this lovely, calm... More

Great cycle around the loch with lots of wildlife to see. Parking a bit on the steep side for what is on offer though.

Wonderful place to have a walk and some fresh air, lovely clean blue water too! Parked on the road, so didn't have to worry about paying to park the car as people have previously stated!! Lots of resident ducks to feed and wonderful views whilst walking.

Great walk around the Loch - approx. 3+ miles - nothing too strenuous. Walked around and then also later biked around (Mike's Bikes - recommend them also). Great spot for a picnic.
