This castle is about average to many other historic castles open for visitors to walk around, however, this one has the unique story of the tunnels mined under the castle walls to try blowing it up during attack. Fun to go down into the tunnels to appreciate this. The "museum" beside the castle also adds some extra insights not often... More

Local history in abundance - as this castle is mainly ruins so do not expect much. Brilliant views of the coast and The Old Course of St Andrews. As it was a bright sunny day the castle looked rather splendid in the sun - for me the town of St Andrews is so much better - it is a lovely... More

You can't visit St Andrews and not wander around all the historic sights which we day. Set against a backdrop of grey sky and rough sea, I thought it was stunning. More

This castle is nice, and it has a cool little exhibit for children, but not one of the better ruins in the country. It lacks the verve of the cathedral next door. More

The location high on the cliff is superb and evocative, while the mine and counter-mine and the bottle dungeon are powerful reminders of a brutal age. More

St. Andrews Castle is basically a ruin. However it has several important attachments to Scottish history and in particular to the Reformation period. So, although there's nothing spectacular, (except the example of mine and undermine), it is another castle that needs to be ticked off on your list. More
