Firstly, Paul and Hazel, our theatrical leaders, were great, so if you do this tour, you would want them for sure! When the show started I couldn't tell right away that Hazel was part of the show and thought she may have been a passionate participant. This tour takes you to three or four different pubs were you spend about... More

Tour leaves at 7:30 from Grassmarket and finishes at 10:00 in New Town, with 4 pub stops along with the way. Basically you wander around Edinburgh getting drunk and listening to people banter about books. Which is an automatic victory in my book. The two hosts are professional actors- they not only delivered engaging performances but responded with flair to... More

You will not only have fun, but also learn something about the great Scottish writers (and how … eccentric... some of them were :P) The performance is done by professional actors so the experience couldn't be better. And you will also visit famous historical pubs and sites. Cheers!

Truly great tour, both informative and funny! Very difficult to balance both, however, these gentlemen (Gary and Riley) accomplish this feat with ease.

Caroline and Gregor were the best guides! Their acting was fantastic. They played off each other and were also so knowledgable of it all! Great thing to do!

This 2 1/2 hour tour in the evening highlights the writers of Edinburgh in the pubs and neighborhoods that they frequented. Ross and his companion treated us to a unique, meaningful and entertaining evening. Don't miss it!

Last summer I set off on a 5-year goal to celebrate my next 5 birthdays in 5 different countries. The very first year, I found myself in Edinburgh on the eve of my 23rd birthday. While leafing through a LP book, I stumbled upon The Edinburgh Literary Pub Tour and decided I had to try this out. For me this... More

A friend of mine talked me into going on this tour because it's something of a pub crawl, walking tour, and a great activity for fans of literature. It kicks off at the Beehive Inn at the Grassmarket at 7:30. My tip is to arrive early, book a spot on the tour, and have dinner at the Inn (which serves... More

A good fun way to spend an evening in Edinburgh. Mostly outside so in the Scottish spring you do have to wrap up warmly.

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
