I went to a gig in the cellar bar last night and was astounded when I went upstairs for the loo: there were some 20 musicians have a jam session. Of these about 14 were playing the fiddle. They were playing real old traditional Scottish music. As a Scot, I hate the tackiness of the Royal Mile but this was... More

As many other places and streets in Edinburgh Canongate is one of them for sure! :) A must place to go and see for anyone visiting Edinburgh for the first time.

This is the east end of the Royal mile and everything here speaks about the history of great Edinburgh. Many courts and buildings to explore plus very close to the Holyrood and the Parliament.

A nice area to walk around in, not quite as full of sites as some of the rest of the Royal Mile, but not bad. As with much of the street becareful walking as often the road is uneven. Overall an enjoyable place to stroll along.

Worth wandering down the other end of the royal for a look around. A really under appreciated part of the city and really beautiful in spots.

We have been trying for 3 years to visit Canongate Kirk the church on Canongate and this year for the first time managed to time it just right. What a beautiful place it is. Surprisingly the pews are painted a pale blue colour and there are no stained glass windows but it works. A fabulous place well worth a visit.... More

The Canongate has many interesting buildings and is at the eastern end of the Royal Mile. Many famous people are interred in Canongate Kirkyard.

The Canongate is a great place in which to live with a wonderful community spirit. In the old days the Canongate was a separate burgh outside the city walls, the World's End pub being part of the boundary wall! The name originates from Canons' Gait or canons' walk in deference to the Canons who used to inhabit the monastery at... More

Lots to see and explore. Best done on a dry day though. Full of history. Ignore all the 'tartan tat' stores on the way - waste of space and rip off!
