If you are not going to get out to some of the Historic Scotland sites around the country, this is a nice ruin an easy taxi ride in town. We had it almost to ourselves and were glad we visited.

This was the most authentic castle i've visited in my Europe trip this year. The ruins are well preserved and the Castle have lots of plaques that indicate the rooms original purposes. The view of the city is breathtaking!
Just some tips:
1) It is a HUGE Castle, full of little passages and small stairs, so be careful with young...

Craigmillar is a very interesting old ruin. We enjoyed it a lot, though we were in a hurry to catch an airplane. Our only complaint, as with all the historic properties of Scotland, is that opening hours are extremely limited. It would be nice to have them open earlier and/or stay open later.

This was, by far, one of my most favorite castle ruins to visit. It was untouched by Cromwell, so much of the structure still stands. There is a lovely view of Edinburgh Castle and Arthur's seat from the top of the castle.
It also boats a huge grassy area within the surrounding walls.
I highly recommend visiting Craigmillar Castle while...

Another well presented Historic Scotland property. I love history, and this place is full of it, but for me the best part is the beautiful trees in the courtyard. Breathtaking! The staff were very helpful and I managed to spend a couple of hours just exploring this beautiful ruin.

Another of our favourite haunts - when the kids were smaller, they'd enjoy playing hide and seek in here; the castle is a maze of stairwells, corridors and passageways that lead to rooms so steeped in history that you can almost feel the residents talking to you from centuries ago.
Whenever we have friends staying with us for the first...

Castle ruins are still in quite good condition. Great views back to Edinburgh and interesting bit of history. Buy the guide book for £2.50 as there aren't many boards of information through out the castle.

If you are in the area, you have to visit this castle. It is the real deal, complete with banqueting hall and dungeons, Although quite ruined, there is still a huge amount of it standing and you can wander about in towers and rooms, get high up onto the battlements etc. Great day out.

We took bus 7 to the Royal Infirmary and then walked behind to find the path up. Was about 10-15 min. You can also take the 42 and get off at the other side if Craigmillar Park. Either way, it was a pretty castle and worth the effort if you have seen the "main" sights. Another 20-30 min walk will...
