Had a great experience venturing underground the city of Edinburgh and learning and discovering the hidden past of how things came about. We had an excellent tour guide who knew his stuff and thoroughly enjoyed the visit.

What a fantastic tour, although there are a lot of stairs so if not good on your legs beware. But if not well it's a great walk around, we were shown by our guide John who was funny and knowledgable. If in Edinburgh well worth the visit.

We had a great tour with John. Very funny and really animated the place for us. The close itself is fascinating but wouldn't be the same without the guide.

This attraction is well worth a visit. The tour guide was very energetic and full of information about Mary Kings Close. I really enjoyed all the different underground rooms, and the impressive condition that some of them reaming in.

We were shown round this unique visitor experience by Daniel who as a merchant of the 15th century told us how the different homes now underground had been used. Great tales and atmosphere of the past.

We were taken on a tour by Chris T, he was very enthusiastic and immersed himself in the role of a 19th century character (too much for me but I'm miserable like that). You walk through houses and streets now under a parliament building. I find it amazing seeing first hand how people used to live and it doesn't take... More

This really gave you an idea of old Edinburgh and the conditions in which they lived their lives. The guide Stuart was amusing and well informed and made the whole visit instructive and enjoyable

Very interesting insight to the rum goings on of a past society - and we thought the working class had it bad today - no comparison! Our guide was funny and informative and helped us get the feel of what it was like to live in them days. Not suitable for anyone with any walking difficulty. The floor is very... More

Bit scary going down into the dark never been a favourite of mine but loved seeing the old streets and houses even though it's a bit eerie, would definitely recommend a visit

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
