This half-hour guided tour opens up a whole new dimension of life in Edinburgh – revealing something of the effectively subterranean lives of some unfortunates in earlier centuries. One is led through a labyrinth of dark, low-ceilinged rooms and passageways; and these of themselves would provide enough dramatic effect without the at times somewhat overwrought commentary.

I absolutely loved this tour and our tour guide Dan was fantastic! You get a great feel for what life was like and Ioved the use of different media. The tour is appropriate for all different ages and a must do when you visit Edinburgh.

Our guide was John and he gave a very interesting and fun tour. It's fascinating to see what people lived in and to imagine the sights and smells of the times. Enjoyed the stories and John really brought them to life. Although it's not cheap, everything else seems to be about the same price so I guess that's just the... More

Thoroughly enjoyable hour. Informative, interesting, witty and very different When my 8 year old enjoyed it as much as I did then they've got to be getting something right I'm really bad with names but I think our guide could have been Pam? and she was superb.

I expected this to be interesting but corny and touristy. It was actually very well done. Our guide stayed in period character till the end and enlightened us about life in Edinburgh during the Plague years.

We went on the day tour, which focuses on social history. It was incredibly informative and interesting and really helped to explain the city's history. Our tour guide Paul was dripping with a hilarious dry humour that the whole group seemed to really enjoy. I would thoroughly recommend this tour - make the time to do this if you're in... More

This was fantastic! Definitely a highlight of our visit to Edinburgh. Our tour guide was the guy from the Netherlands, not sure if his name but think it was Ernest. He was fantastic!

Having attended wonderful social history tours at a third of the cost of this one, I was more than a little disappointed by the 'Dark Truth' experience. Some of the actors were rather amateurish and seemed to be struggling with their lines, and the tour was much shorter than the advertised hour, which made the price sting just that bit... More

My teenage daughter and I visited on our last morning of a mid-week break to Edinburgh and are so glad we did. Our guide Pam was excellent, very knowledgable and she made the tour fun as well when interacting with past occupants of Mary King Close! It was extremely interesting to learn how people lived in the past, and the... More

Such a great tour above ground - getting to learn about the closes, parliament, Castle, Edinburgh old and new towns and many many stories along the way. Tour guides are in period dress and we had a great young lady by the name of Amber (I think) who also recommended some food spots for us to try throughout our stay... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
