This tour transports you to a time and place that is hard to imagine today; unsanitary conditions, disease, and poverty. The narrow alleys littered with human waste, damp homes with tamped earth floors, and large animals kept in close proximity combined to make this a hard life for those who lived in the crowded city center. The tour brought these... More

Only visited the cafe and the food was lovely, the steak baguette was delicious and Sam that served us was a really lovely girl and we promised her a special mention.Stop here for a little bit of peace away from the main mile.

The attraction itself is interesting because you get to see what life was like in the old Edinburgh alleys (closes), but what I found even more impressive was how accommodating the tour coordinators are. My wife and I were visiting recently, and could not make any of the remaining tour times on our last day In Edinburgh. A tour guide,... More

We visited Real Mary King's Close today our group comprised of 2 adults and 2 kids. We initially thought it was slightly expensive as on the website there is no option for a family ticket but when we went to the attraction to get a ticket we was plesently surprised to get a 15% discount for a family ticket! The... More

What an amazing experience, traveling underground to the old old town and seeing the original Edinburgh streets is quite a treat and the history lessons are easy to remember due to the skill of the actors taking you back in time to give you a glimpse of what it was like back when... strongly recommend this tour.

The hype made this sound bigger and better than it was, although what was there was very interesting and the guide made it "alive". Shows what people used to have to live like - very dark until you get used to it and spooky, Worth a visit if you have the time.

Love the historical importance, we had a great guide, very knowledgable. Going underground gives the feeling of how people lived in those days

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
