Someone recommended we visited the close. We found Mary King's close the very last night. It was really interesting but not as great as expected. The tour guide did not mention things advertised on the brochure, it is a bit expensive for what it is. But I still do not regret it.

Fascinating insight into 16th century life in Edinburgh and tour guide Agnes (real name Amber) was perfect mix of enthusiasm and knowledge. Highly recommended.

Thoroughly enjoyed this tour through the underground streets and vaults. Took about an hour and our tour quiide was lovely , a great since of humour which made it lots of fun. Very uneven floors so wear your flat shoes . Would recommend .

We visited this exhibition for the first time today, and could not recommend it enough. Fascinating history and Chris T was the best guide we could have asked for, giving us the facts and keeping everyone laughing on the way round. Will be recommending to family and friends!

Fascinating tour of original part of Edinburgh that was built over. Great guide - informative and humorous! We booked on-line ahead of our visit to Edinburgh. Limited numbers for tours so expect to wait at busy times. Nice courtyard for coffee and great shop.

Fascinating step back to the 17th Century. Very good guide - thanks. I would have got more understanding of the layout and what we were looking at, had standing in the Close been at the start. However, it is entertainment not O-level history!

Our 8 year old picked the Real Mary King's Close on his list of sites to see. We were not disappointed. The tour guide presented us with a great view of Edinburgh history. The walk through the past helped us understand the city we are walking through today. We would recommend this for any family visiting Edinburgh.

Found just off the Royal Mile, towards the top end. Around £14 per adult for an hour's tour so not cheap but it is interesting. All underground, you are accompanied by around 20 other folk and a tour guide who recounts the history and stories. Not always easy to understand everything they are relaying. Felt a bit over priced. Callum gave us a great tour with interesting stories that both my wife and I and our kids enjoyed. We learned a lot and it filled in a lot of Edinburgh information gaps left by the bus tour that we previously took. Interesting gifts in the gift shop as well.

Was first nervous as didn't know what to expect, very interesting and historical. Nice to look back at the past and how it was then and learning the history of it to, also the tour guides was quite funny. Would recommend but a bit over priced.

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
