We went to Mary King's close as a couple and had a tour with John who was playing the character of Robert Ferguson. John was an excellent tour guide and very knowledgeable. The tour itself was really interesting and it was good to see the history of the city of Edinburgh. The only downside was the group we were on... More

I suspect the enjoyment of this tour will depend on your guide. Our guide was informative but his voice was monotone, he lacked any sense of drama or intrigue. The vaults are rather sanitised and lack atmosphere making it difficult at times to realise how many people perished in those 'homes'. Also, occasionally you could hear another guided taking place... For £14 per person this was a value for money look at a hidden treasure. My teenage son would love this tour.Chris T tour guide moved the group around very safely with good banter.

While the promise of seeing a "city beneath the city" sounds wonderful, that's not what you get to see here -- just some small underground vaults which used to be "homes', but are rather like little whitewashed caves. The quality of the tour depends a great deal upon the acting skills of your guide, and our guide ("Bertha") wasn't very... More

We are sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your experience. The Real Mary King's Close visitor attraction is a series of now underground houses and rooms dating from the 1600s, unfortunately there is no underground city that we are aware of. Our underground site remains authentic to the conditions of the last 500 years, giving visitors the most... More

A real insight in Edinburghs colourful history, though am sure the guides have embellished their scripts, not always accurately. Nevertheless an interesting and spooky experience.

Took my partner for his birthday treat, was overheard discussing what else we were doing for his birthday and was given a free photo! The staff were brilliant, really knowledgeable and interesting, brought the place alive again. Have been desperate to go here for years and was not disappointed!

I absolutely loved this attraction. You buy slotted tickets and are taken around by a wonderful costumed character from the time of the plague in the close. This is one of the most atmospheric places I've ever experienced, and I learnt so much! Lots of interactive bits on the way round too, and the gift shop is also fantastic! I... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
