First trip to Scotland and will return! This is a must tour!! Dougie, our guide / driver was excellent. Great disposition, lots of patience, energy and great sense of humour. He obviously enjoys what he is doing. Very informative tour. Great scenery! The sound system was a little lacking and sometimes hearing the narration was difficult. Learned and retained more... I discovered The Hairy Coo Tour Company when I was searching for things to do in Edinburgh. In fact, it was listed at the top of the most recommended attractions. Their website lists a few tours available, with the "Free Highland Tour" being the most popular. It's technically only "free" if you're a miserly cheapskate, though, because they operate on... More

We were unable to book the free tour due to it being sold out. However, we happily booked the Highlands/Loch Ness/Whisky Distillery tour and it was well worth the money! Although a very long day, I would highly recommend you book a tour with the Hairy Coo company during your stay in Scotland. We were picked up at 07:30 and... More

(This was not the free tour) We were only in Scotland a few days and didn't want to rent a car, but wanted to see more of the country. This was a wonderful tour that allowed us to see much of the amazing countryside of Scotland, while including a tour to the Deanston Whisky Distillery and a stop at Loch... More

I had an amazing day on The Hairy Coo Tour. By far one of my favorite days abroad. If you don't have a car of your own/don't know how to get places then this is a great options. We went to multiple sites including Castle Doune (from Monty Python, Outlander, and GoT), The William Wallace Memorial, and saw real live... More

If you are only in Edinburgh for a few days and want a taster of what's outside the city then this is a great tour to go on. Our guide Dougie was super friendly and tried to involve everyone to ensure they had a great experience. If you enjoy Scottish history or the movies that are a result of it... More

Our guide Dougie drove us to some of the main places related to Scottish history while he explained what happened and when. He stopped often in order we could admire the landscape and take pictures. We had a wonderful time!

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
