Highland Explorer Tours promised traditional music, dance, and one of the most incredible festivals in the EU and boy oh boy, that was an understatement. Our guide, Dougie, was invaluable for our Shetland Islands experience because he continuously shared historical and current facts, tips, local knowledge - some relevant, some amusing and always interesting. As with any group tour, you... More

Just back from an escorted 6 day trip to Shetland to see the Viking Fire Festival of Up Helly Aa. Our guide was Dougie who was not only our driver but the most amazing guide, taking us all over the island to sites of interest, booking us into a great restaurant, informing and amusing us in equal measure and fluidly... If you are thinking of going, probably looking at the pictures is the best indication of what it's all about. It was lovely how welcoming the Shetlanders were to us as outsiders at... More

There were only 4 of us on the coach but it didn't stop our driver/guide ChrisP ftom giving us a first rate tour. We went to extra places that were not on the itinerary as we had plenty of time. We left at 8.45sm and got back to Edinburgh about 5pm. Brilliant value for money!

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
