I took the Loch Lomond tour and you really spend most of the day on the bus. I feel this is probably true for Loch Ness as well. Stirling Castle, Luss, and Aberfoyle are all giant tourist traps. You also get almost no time at Loch Lomond or Aberfoyle to explore the beautiful countryside (30 minutes abo.) Perhaps it is... More

1. In foul weather. on motorways, the driver drove with only one hand on the wheel and occasionally steered with a thumb on the bottom of the wheel. She drove far too fast for the weather conditions. I was in the front seat and could see what she was doing. 2. The meal at the lunch venue was disgusting (apparently... More

Fantastic professional tour guide Tony, so passionate , so knowledgeable, taking us see so much more than what you can ask for on a wee 3 days tour from Edinburgh to Isle of Sky, which i think include many gems of natural beauty of Scotland, make me fall in love with Scotland . Like most journeys it's the people you meet on the way that make life interesting. Scotland by itself is a beauty to behold - our tour guide, Debs, made it something to love. The passion she displayed for her country, her storytelling and her all round knowledge made a five day trip the experience of a lifetime. Great people on... More

Greeted with a deluge from above, this day could not have been more perfectly Scottish. Our tour guide was humorous, chipper, and knowledgeable about the sites we passed along. Luss was the ideal spot to experience a little bit of all the best - the Highland Games, Scottish highlands looming nearby, and Loch Lommond a 10 minute walk away. I... More

Hi friends, This is Rashmi and would love to share my 3 day (26_28 Aug2015) Tour experience of Scottish Highlands + Isle of Skye with Highland Explorer Tours and really show my appreciation for this company and Tony, our tour guide! The weather wasn't great, it rained almost all the time, but we had the bestest guide ever - friendly,... More

I absolutely recommend the three days tour to the Scottish Highlands and Isle of Skye! We saw gorgeous landscapes and many beautiful castles. We enjoyed it even when the weather wasn't really good because our guide, Tony, was the best storyteller on Earth and he told us lots of stories about Scottish history and Gaelic traditions. We had a great... More

My family and I recently returned from the 5 day tour to Oban, the Isle of Skye and Inverness. This was a fantastic experience which I would highly reccommend! Our guide Andy was very friendly, knowledgeable, and had many funny jokes to share! He kept everyone entertained throughout the journey and got to know everyone individually. He took us to... More

We went on a 3 day Isle of Skye tour 21-22 Aug 2015 and our driver/guide 'Duffy' was amazing. Firstly, it was a good break for my partner from driving - and Duffy was so informative and full of local knowledge about the area travelled and history to go with it....you just don't get that when you do a self... My husband and I went on the 5 day Highland Explorer tour on August 10, 2015. We chose Highland Explorer after reading countless online reviews, and we definitely made the right decision! We thoroughly enjoyed all of our Scottish experiences, from meeting the "hairy Highland coos", to visiting the battlefield at Culloden. Every day was filled with new places to... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
