Description: Visit this charming rustic beauty of a forerunner to the Industrial...
Visit this charming rustic beauty of a forerunner to the Industrial revolution. The rural corn mill, still run today by the gentle flow of Barry Burn, was the ancestor to today's food preparation processes and a myriad of complex technologies that sprung from simple water-wheels, gears, pulleys and belts. Enjoy the tranquility of this renewable and sustainable approach to work & food in bygone days. Listen to the splash of the wheel and the rumble of the mechanics as the building shakes itself into life. Tours explaining the significance of these mills and telling some of the tales and stories of those that worked in and around these hubs of community are offered and bookings can be made to see flour being ground.

Took Dad there for fathers day and we weren't disappointed. As a farmer he loved seeing the mill working and reminiscing about how things were done in the past.A great day out.

Wonderful trip back in time.Great to see the machinery still working and flour being milled. The guide, who was so enthusiastic, brought the mill back to life and made the experience so much richer. The displays are well informed and the guide answered lots of questions. The location is absolutely lovely and it would have been a good idea to have... More

The Miller's tale was riveting. What I imagined would be a 5 minute visit was a wonderful history lesson told with wit and enthusiasm by the wonderful Irish miller.Marvellous to have the workings of the mill explained and to learn the origins of expressions now in common parlance like to show your mettle. Great way to spend an afternoon. We enjoyed every... More

I visited the mill yesterday as I had heard good reviews from a friend. The mill was easy to find, just a minutes drive outside Carnoustie. I wasn't disappointed, the mill is set in stunningly beautiful surrounds with a lovely walk, which leads to a small waterfall and loops around to bring you back to the sheep paddock and orchard.... Visiting the mill was a very pleasant peaceful experience as it has been beautifully restored and is situated in a sunny glade next to the burn. The special experience was delivered by the Irish guide who gave our group of 13 friends a tour. It was obvious from his enthusiasm, knowledge, skills and determination that he has a big place... Although the county of Angus is in many ways a gem undiscovered (save by golfers) among Scottish regions, it still has plenty to offer, with a fine coastline, rolling agricultural landscapes as well as hills and mountains, and some engaging attractions. Barry Mill is certainly one of them, a rare working survivor of what was once an important feature of... More

Although we live fairly nearby this attraction, we had never visited the Barry Mill until a recent stay-cation. And aren't we glad we visited! This mill is in perfect working order, nestled in a lovely peaceful hollow above the Barry Burn. The curator is a fund of knowledge and sets all the working parts of the mill in motion explaining... Visit on a Sunday when they mill some cerals, excellent description of how the process worked and you get up close to the machinery running from the power of the water wheel. So much clever engineering went into this and its a treat to see on all three floors. has some riverside walks but was to wet to follow them.

Such an enjoyable visit - made special by the unhurried, knowledgeable and enthusiastic approach of our guide, we were so pleased to see the mill in full swing, grinding the flower - well worth a visit, you will come away knowing far more than when you went...
