Owner description: Prehen House is one of the North West’s most historic buildings. Situated next to the famous woods, it commands stunning views of Derry, the river Foyle and the hills beyond.Prehen is intimately linked with the history of Derry. Records reveal that it was inhabited by 1640; in 1738 the Knox family began their great association with Prehen when Andrew Knox, the MP for Donegal married Honoria Tomkins, the Prehen heiress. In Victorian times the colourful Colonel George Knox was one of Derry’s most eminent figures. But with World War I looming his grandson Baron George Carl Otto Louis von Scheffler Knox was put under house arrest. Soon after the 3,641 acre estate was seized as ‘enemy property’.Happily, the house was brought back into another branch of the Knox family and today the North West has a wonderful heirloom forever linked with the history of the City

Recently visited this enchanted house with my children at Christmas. Totally magical experience. Me and my wife were mesmerised by the history of the actual house, and the antiques that are within it. Would highly recommend at any time of the year.

I grew up beside Prehen House in the nearby housing development named for it, alas not in the big house itself! Back then it was an atmospheric mysterious house, reputedly haunted, how wonderful that it is now open to the public and accessible in so many ways, such as the guided tour, the coach house self catering accommodation and the... This was an amazing experience. Prehen House is a hidden gem and well worth a visit. The history tour is fantastic but yet so sad in places.

Santa Grotto was a truly magical Christmas experience for the kids (even us adults thoroughly enjoyed it). The hunt for Santa through Prehen House was brilliant and the kids were totally amazed and captivated, they talked about it for day's. We can't wait to visit again next Xmas Thank you Colin & Declan

Stayed here recently as the owner Colin has recently been granted B&B status. It was a magical night and very different to staying in an atmosphereless hotel room. Slept in a wonderful four poster bed but did hear a few odd noises in the middle of the night....but it all added to the experience....after all it is haunted !!! If... More

Colin is a wonderful host and what makes Prehen House even more special is getting a guided tour from an actual descendent of this historical mansion. I recommend to all my friends in Cork and to anyone that shares a passion for the preservation of special places like Prehen House.
