Description: The house in which the late Welsh poet Dylan Thomas was born and lived...
The house in which the late Welsh poet Dylan Thomas was born and lived with his family for the first 23 years of his life. Enter Dylan Thomas Birthplace and you go back in time to when the Thomas family bought No 5 as a new house in 1914 just a few months before Dylan was born in the front bedroom. Soak up the atmosphere of the house in which he lived for 23 years and wrote two thirds of his published work The Dylan Thomas Birthplace is unique in that it allows you to stay in the house as a visitor. When you book the house you have exclusive use during your stay. The house has a growing reputation for introducing new literary and musical talent from both Wales and the rest of the world. The house is open for house tours every day at 11am / 1pm / 3pm and the relaxed journey takes you through the beautifully restored rooms to give you an insight into life in the Edwardian era and a perfect starting point to discover just how Dylan was inspired by "...this sea-town..." These tours generally last 1hr 15mins. Pre-booking is advisable as on occasion the house is required for filming, meetings and other purposes which will mean the inability to carry out house tours at times where advertised. We do of course, apologise for any inconvenience which may be caused in these instances. Pre-booking can be done by phone or email

A special weekend away.

Absolutely fantastic to visit Dylan's boathouse where he wrote from. You cannot visit Laughne without going there.

We visited the Boat house at Laugharne, overlooking the Burrow Estuary, with great views towards Llanelli. a humble cottage beautifully positioned overlooking the river and estuary. It is easy to see how the location would inspire writers and poets. It is now a cafe, not spectacular but adequate. You can visit the rooms where Dylan Thomas did his writing a... More

A thoroughly enjoyable tour with the very passionate and knowledgeable Matt. Great to get a sense not only of Thomas's surroundings during his formative years as a poet, but also a fascinating insight into Welsh life in the 1910s. Thank you!

Knowledgeable guide showed us round this fascinating house which shows the home of the Thomas family while Dylan lived there. We found out lots about Dylan and also about the story of how the house was restored to its former glory. Best to phone ahead to book a tour.

Marked with a blue plaque stating that this ordinary looking house was the birthplace of the Welsh poet and legendary drinker (it killed him in the end). It is on the right side as your ascending Cwmdonkin Drive in Uplands, Swansea. Tours are available (on notice) and I think that it may be possible to spend the night there (don't... More

5 Cwmdonkin Drive is a must do if you are a fan of Dylan Thomas. Less known than the Boathouse at Laugharne, this is a step back in time to view where two thirds of the poet's published works resulted from material created whilst living there. The curator, Matt is incredibly welcoming and an enthusiastic guide. The tour is not rushed... More

This was a highly informative tour of the birthplace and childhood home of Wales' greatest lyrical poet. The house has been sympathetically restored to reflect the fashions and furniture of the time. The Birthplace curator, Matt Hughes, welcomed us as though we were personal friends of the Thomas family and the visit felt special. It was inspirational to learn that... More

I was brought up in Morriston, not far from where Dylan Thomas was born, have always wanted to see his birth place but had not had the opportunity to visit before, as 2014 was a very important time in the history of Dylan Thomas I thought I should visit. it was so very interesting to see his home and feel... Spent a fascinating hour and a half being guided around this house. Our guide was really well-briefed, knowledgable and enthusiastic - he brought the house to life! It was a delightful insight into Dylan Thomas' life in Swansea.
