Description: Welcome to Bute Park & Arboretum, an extensive area of mature parkland...
Welcome to Bute Park & Arboretum, an extensive area of mature parkland that forms the 'green heart' of Cardiff. The site is managed by Cardiff Council and recently benefitted from a major £5.6M restoration project, supported by a £3.1M grant award from the Heritage Lottery Fund, which restored important historic features, provided new facilities and helped tell the park's fascinating story. At 56 hectares (equivalent to 75 football pitches), Bute Park is one of the largest urban parks in Wales and comprises a broad mix of historic landscape, urban woodland, sports pitches, arboretum, horticultural features and river corridor. Bute Park offers something for everyone including the Bute Park Education Centre, 3 wonderful cafes, toilet facilities, a woodland balance trail, sculpture trail, fitness trail and a varied events programme. Easily accessible from the centre of Cardiff, Bute Park is listed along with Cardiff Castle as a Grade 1 historic designed landscape and contains the fascinating site of a former Blackfriars Friary which is a scheduled ancient monument. The magnificent Arboretum contains 41 Champion trees, the tallest or widest of their species in the UK or Ireland, which is more than any other public park in the UK. Along with the rest of the rare tree collection, the stunning Herbaceous Border, and the range of wildlife present, Bute Park and Arboretum is worth a visit all year round.

Really nice walk close to the river. Met some friendly dogs and dog owners, Some great photo opportunities. Lots of bridge crossing opportunities (they even have their own wibbly wobbly bridge). Some quaint cafes dotted around with good hot chocolate. What's not to like - nature in the middle of a city - if only all cities saw the importance... More

A beautiful park with plenty of pathways and open space. There are two cafes within the park and from here you can get a river bus into cardiff bay.

Excellent place to be able to enjoy nature in the middle of the City. Offers a wide range of walks both on tarmac and trails through woodland and boasts wide variety of trees, shrubs, flowers and mushrooms including blue bells, large oak trees and oyster mushrooms. Absolute must visit during a bright day.

Loved walking around the park with family. Great contrast to hustle and bustle of shopping centres. Lovely open space, good signposts and lots of routes to follow.

This park is located perfectly with many entrances around Cardiff. Also, located in the park is the water bus stop. Great place to run around and spend time with your family.

We visited this park on a glorious sunny day and walked alongside the River Taff. The river has become a lot cleaner in recent years and the water is crystal clear in some places. The surrounding foliage is well-maintained and the paths are wide and easy to follow. There are lots of signposts too so it's difficult to get lost.... More

Currently living in cardiff bay and have now decided that my regular cycle ride will be along the Taff trail. This runs along the river Taff and goes as far as Brecon. I have cycled through bute park regularly and the scenery is outstanding. Can't wait to cycle through in the spring and summer

This is such a beautiful space, easy to walk around with excellent walking and biking surfaces. Its clean and attractively laid out. There is a river, the Taff, which has a water taxi to take you to Cardiff Bay. Lovely sports fields, great dog romping areas and lots of room for little legs to run and play.

It's a long way around the whole thing, and gives a new visitor a good insight into the beating heart of Cardiff. One thing to bear in mind is that food outlets are few and far between - so take something with you. Also bear in mind that there are river crossings at 2 points - and the walk will... More
