The site is managed by Cardiff Council and is currently undergoing a major £5.6M restoration project supported by a £3.1M grant award from the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2009 which will restore some important historic features, provide new facilities and help tell the park's fascinating story. At 56 hectares (equivalent to 75 football pitches), Bute Park is one of the largest urban parks in Wales and comprises a broad mix of historic landscape, urban woodland, sports pitches, arboretum, horticultural features and river corridor. Bute Park offers something for everyone including the Bute Park Education Centre, 3 wonderful cafes, toilet facilities, a woodland balance trail, sculpture trail, fitness trail and a varied events programme. Easily accessible from the centre of Cardiff, Bute Park is listed along with Cardiff Castle as a Grade 1 historic designed landscape and contains the fascinating site of a former Blackfriars Friary which is a scheduled ancient monument. The magnificent Arboretum contains 41 Champion trees, the tallest or widest of their species in the UK or Ireland, which is more than any other public park in the UK. Along with the rest of the rare tree collection, the stunning Herbaceous Border, and the range of wildlife present, Bute Park and Arboretum is worth a visit all year round. « less

With the many places in Cardiff to go for a walk, Bute park is definately in my top 5. Walking along the river with beautiful views and tall trees escaping onto vast landscapes, multiple bridges, Waterfalls and streams, a lovely place for a Walk, Run, Cycle or even a picnic.

We were fortunate to be staying at a hotel that nearly backed up to the park. It was a beautiful walk along the river in to town. The flower beds and enormous old trees were just beautiful. There were many people out biking, jogging, walking and rowing on the river. This is one of the nicest city parks I have... More

Have walked through there several times, today included and have always felt this as the perfect place to get away from the rush of Cardiff City centre. The trees are always pretty to look at (I imagine they will be even better in a few weeks' time with all the autumn colour). One or two are already showing red leaves.... More

A park for young and old near the castle. Lovely flowers when we were there. Easy walking and plenty of places to sit.

A lovely park, tranquility at the back of the castle; worth seeking out. It is well kept and not too many people either which made it a pleasant oasis

The car parking cost £5.20 for 4 hours which I thought was very expensive. I would have liked to have stayed longer but the prices went up ridiculously. Unfortunately there was an event going on in the park at the time of our visit which meant some of the park was off limits but we headed straight for the jetty... More
