Owner description: Welcome to Bute Park & Arboretum, an extensive area of mature parkland that forms the 'green heart' of Cardiff. The site is managed by Cardiff Council and is currently undergoing a major £5.6M restoration project supported by a £3.1M grant award from the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2009 which will restore some important historic features, provide new facilities and help tell the park's fascinating story. At 56 hectares (equivalent to 75 football pitches), Bute Park is one of the largest urban parks in Wales and comprises a broad mix of historic landscape, urban woodland, sports pitches, arboretum, horticultural features and river corridor. Bute Park offers something for everyone including the Bute Park Education Centre, 3 wonderful cafes, toilet facilities, a woodland balance trail, sculpture trail, fitness trail and a varied events programme. Easily accessible from the centre of Cardiff, Bute Park is listed along with Cardiff Castle as a Grade 1 historic designed landscape and contains the fascinating site of a former Blackfriars Friary which is a scheduled ancient monument. The magnificent Arboretum contains 41 Champion trees, the tallest or widest of their species in the UK or Ireland, which is more than any other public park in the UK. Along with the rest of the rare tree collection, the stunning Herbaceous Border, and the range of wildlife present, Bute Park and Arboretum is worth a visit all year round.

Where else would you find parkland adjacent to city centre as big as the city centre itself? Well maintained and excellent flat walks. If you include the adjacent Pontcanna I do have a grumble with an overpriced low-quality civic campsite.

Bute Park is well worth a visit if you are a visitor to Cardiff. On the doorstep of the bustling city centre you can walk as far as you wish through the park area. Starting from Castle Street you can walk various loops around the park. The River Taff forms a natural boundary on one side of the parkland and... More

Within just a few minutes walk from the main shopping area this wonderful peaceful oasis of parkland can be found. Just behind the castle is an area of parkland along either side of the river. Enter just passed the castle via an archway next t to the lodge/coffee shop. This stretches for a mile or two meaning that you can... More

We enjoyed a beautify walk in Bute Park on a cold frosty, but sunny, December morning. Highly recommended, and why not visit Pettigrew Team Rooms while your here and have a great Welsh Cream Tea.

Our hotel was near the Park, so we were able to go walking. Great cafés for lunch, if you rent a bike nearby you can cycle all the way to Llandaff in one direction and the harbour in the other.

We liked everything about this attraction. It's been largely re-built on Roman then Norman foundations, and has a truly magnificent inner keep which is many metres high. The interior furnishings of the main castle are astonishingly beautiful. The castle sits in its own parkland right in the middle of a bustling city centre - truly amazing.
