Hansel and Gretel

Outstanding vocal and acting performances and a darkly imaginative production with plenty of humour. Don't miss it if you get a chance.

Being very familiar with the fairy tale and the music, decided to go to see the opera as well. We also left at the interval as we almost fell asleep in the first act. The sets did nothing at all to impress us, and were austere and simple and cheap to produce. The text didn't really match the music, as... More

What a shame the previous reviewer left at the interval. The first half is, admittedly, gloomy - more Tim Burton than Disney - but the second act was pure pantomime and a joy to watch. Still, can't please everyone all the time. As a more general remark about the WNO, I'm very proud and very pleased to have a world... More

I have just taken my wife to see the WNO Hansel and Gretel performance in Cardiff. We left at the interval. My thoughts, dark, dank, miserable, I have been to more exciting funerals. A very well known actor managed to get out of the front door of the theatre ahead of us. An expensive birthday present that was a disaster.

We just wanted to visit the building and see the architecture as we couldn't get tickets. The cafe by the entrance which serves alcoholic drinks too in a relaxed upmarket setting was a great spot. Service excellent too

It is many years since Rossini's last opera was presented at Drury Lane by a visiting Italian company [and I was there!] That was splendid but the W N O production in 2014 topped it. The cast was consistent and outstanding, the orchestra and chorus were steered through the score with great aplomb by Carlo Rizzi and the production was... More

I have seen many operas by this company. I have also seen operas staged all over Europe, and can honestly say that the WNO is as good as any I have seen. (Including their recent take on Carmen, which has, incredibly, had tepid reviews from others. It was delightful and riveting.) They are good away from home but truly shine... More

This is the first time that I can criticise a performance. Great singing wasted on a bare stage. But the choreography (as in lack of) was pathetic; I have seen better productions of Carmen in local amateur dramatics! This was wooden, stiff and, frankly boring. The seats are not cheap and, WNO, you have to pull your socks up! This... More

havent visited for a while but always enjoyed the night out, lately though people say that the production is a bit eccentric with minimal staging but the singing is always good, let down by avantgarde settings and direction
