Travelling on the Vale of Rheidol Railway is the finest way to see the stunning Rheidol Valley. We pass through wide open fields, woodland and rugged mountain scenery as the line twists and turns clinging to the hillside gradually climbing nearly 700ft (200m)from Aberystwyth to reach our destination at Devil’s Bridge. Birds of prey such as Red Kite and Buzzards are regularly seensoaring high above the valley floor and breathtaking views can beenjoyed by all.

Just bloody marvellous! Train was a challenge to get in and out for me being on sticks/wheelchair. Quite a large step up to board/depart the train. Two sorts of carriage available; open air (but with roof and no windows) or fully enclosed. Some stations are undergoing restoration, although many are already done. Gorgeous scenery and can view steam from the... More

Many thanks for your review and recommendation. We are sorry you had difficulty boarding and slighting from the carriages. We are unusual in that all trains are made up of vintage carriages dating back to the 1920s and 30s. We have worked hard recently to provide raised platforms at the stations which simplifies boarding and alighting. (Previously these were just... More

Took the steam train to Devils Bridge and back and a lovely day out was had by all. You can see the steam as you chug along the side of the mountain taking in some really lovely views along the way. The Guard told us all about it and let us watch while he stoked the engine for the return... More

Took a ride on this train on Saturday 21st March. Weather was brilliant sunshine throughout and the scenery is stunning with panoramic views of valleys, red kites and lambs.... A one hour journey one way, with a one hour break (or just over four if you catch the second train of the day), with one hour return journey to Aberystwyth.... More

Many thanks for taking the time to review us here on TripAdvisor. We are glad you had an enjoyable trip and thank you for your praise. I have spoken to the Railway Manager and passed on your suggestion about additional cushions on the seat backs. The safety of our passengers is of paramount importance. You are correct, all doors on... More

We are glad you had an enjoyable day out at the railway. I quite agree the open sided summer cars are the best way to travel. We are fortunate the weather this February has been fair. The enclosed carriages are heated. Do come and see us again before too long. More

Located at Aberystwyth -Mid Wales A487 Car park near the ticket office Steam trains travel about 15 miles along a very scenic route ending at Devils Bridge, where it turns around and returns. I believe the track was built to carry slate from the mountains down to the coast. I have travelled on this train line about 6 times, I... More

Many thanks for your review. It is great to hear you are a regular visitor to the line. Whilst many of the Great Little Trains of Wales were built for slate, this was not the case with the Vale of Rheidol. Our commodity was the lead ore from mines, timber (for pit props) and it has carried a passenger services... More

Easy to park in Aberystwyth and a choice of carriages, covered or open, for the journey. The views were spectacular and the little cafe at the top, Devil's Bridge, served reasonable snacks in nice surroundings. Many photographic opportunities from the train as it bends around the mountainous track and time to visit the falls before taking one of the regular... More

We visited the Vale Of Rheidol railway attraction last August on Bank Holiday weekend. I'd not been on it since I was a child, so didn't remember much about it. You can choose to sit in either an enclosed carriage or outdoor (still roof covered). We sat outside on the outgoing journey and inside on the return leg. When we... More

The Vale of Rheidol is very special to me. I have been taking the train to Devil's Bridge for over 50 years and it has always been a wonderful experience. The new parking area adjacent to the entrance is a great benefit instead of trying to find a space elsewhere in one of the many car parks in the town.... More
