Quite Lovely Glimpse into 18th (and 19th) Century Upper Class Life - Photos Allowed!

Admittedly I arrived at the wrong time in the middle of a shower in the midst of a vast group of Swedish tourists. Nevertheless it was a bit irritating to have to wait for the staff to give a lengthy exposition about the house to the group, which in any event had its own guide, before being sold a ticket.... I visited this restored 18th (and, to some extent, 19th) century mansion because it's right next to the wonderful Salisbury Cathedral, it offers a real - i.e. not inflated, museum-style - glimpse into the life of the upper, or upper-middle class of the time(s) - and because it was raining cats and dogs in Salisbury. on that day. I knew... More

The staff were very knowledgeable and helpful. The house is worth a visit even if just to see some of the costumes used in the film. The garden is very pretty with a small tea shop.

This is a very fine early eighteenth century town house in front of Salisbury Cathedral with furnished rooms and some interesting objects. The combination of authentic, elegant, slightly shabby interiors and the unchanged views of the cathedral close make this a real time capsule. Currently celebrating the 20th anniversary of the film version of Sense and Sensibility (for which Mompesson... More

This is an attractive 18th Century Queen Anne townhouse in a lovely position close to the Cathedral. Visits to such houses are much enhanced by the knowledge of the volunteer guides. One shouldn't expect them to know everything but at least to answer straightforward questions in a civil & helpful way. Regrettably this wasn't the case in two of the... More

To be honest, this was my wife's find. She is a Jane Austen fan and wanted t see this quaint house/museum. I wasn't terribly excited about the idea of wandering around this old home, but it turned out to be a very nice little side trip. history can sometimes seem a bit dry until you immerse yourself in it. This... More

As followers of Jane Austen and having an interest in her life and works, known all over the world, we decided to visit this house where the 1995 Sense and Sensibility film was partly filmed. The house is a delight and takes one back into the Georgian era where a small family would have stayed and where possibly Jane stayed.... More

Lovely, lovely lovely. What a joy to volunteer your time @ this home. Sense & Sensibility , cliche I know but the property was a treat. National Trust Membership meant free entry. Glad we stopped

Wonderful collection of drinking glasses. And interesting early English ceramics. The rooms are ok and the Sense and Sensibility exhibition is enjoyable. Nice garden, but the service in the Tea Room is excruciatingly slow. Decent sandwiches.

We visited Salisbury specifically to go to Mompesson House, never having been there before. Currently, there is an exhibition marking the 20th anniversary of the filming of Sense and Sensibility - very interesting. Some of the garments worn in the filming were on show. The volunteers who staff the house are very knowledgeable and informative. Well worth a visit if... More
