Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful house surrounded by peaceful countryside. If you've seen The Other Boleyn Girl you may recognise the manor. I enjoyed the hour and 20 minutes that we were there. However, once you've done the 45 minute tour of the house, popped into the little church, had a 10 minute walk around the garden, that's... More

We visited this house after a trip to Melksham. Very peaceful setting, lovely colourful gardens and interesting Church. The guided tour was most interesting and we found the house really splendid. We would thoroughly recommend a visit, take a picnic.

Well worth the visit when you find it. We commented on the lack of signage both to Great Chalfield and NT signs - the blame was laid, rightly or wrongly, on Wilts Council. And when leaving we found it difficult because the only road signs were very local, But the visit was well worth the trouble - tours of the... More

Very interesting place and the guided tour is very informative. The road leading up is long and narrow but worth the effort.

I visited just the gardens when I spent time at the annual Plant Fair that was held over the early sping B/H weekend. It is a beautiful part of the country and I loved the informality of the gardens. In particular the areas of grass left un-mown with various meadow flowers peeking through and the occasional dark purple tulip punctuating... More

Very interesting National Trust property, very difficult to find if you do not know the area it was not signposted at all. Guided tours on the hour and we just made ours, they are filming there at the moment so many period pieces of furniture have been put away and there are various props around the house - this did... A delight. This is a gem indeed, wonderfully tucked away 'far from the madding crowd' it has all of the features you would expect from a house of this age - and the added delight of being a family home. The gardens are a treat - not manicured to within an inch of their lives which would not suit the... More

Interesting that some reviewers have complained about the lack of perfect manicuring of the garden and the house, given that the most frequent complaint levelled at NT properties is that they are sterile and lacking in atmosphere! At Great Chalfield Manor, you will find a tenanted property which retains the ambience of a family home. For sure, there may be... More

What a lovely place! Get there at "quarter to" the hour and you'll just be in time for the "on the hour" guided tour of inside the house. I was delighted that we got to see upstairs as well as down! The talk was informative and enjoyable. Although small, the garden was very pretty and if you go down to... More
