Take a scenic ferry trip across the River Avon to the Waterside gardens by the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and recreation grounds.

In operation since 1937, and fully rebuilt in 2010 by Avon Boating, 'Malvolio' as it is named has ferried thousands of passengers back and forth over the River Avon. As one of the last remaining hand wound chain ferries in the country you will get to see a unique angle of the river with views downriver to the Holy Trinity Church and upstream to the RST.

Something different

Not expensive and doesn't take long to cross the river, just something different and for fun for my daughter.

I was very much looking forward to seeing the ferry this weekend. So you can imagine my disappointment when I arrived only to find that it had vanished! Hopefully it's only away for the winter/repairs? I'll be back in the spring to try again.

Hi, I'm sorry you were not able to use the ferry crossing on your visit to Stratford. Unfortunately due to the nature of the licensing and operation of the ferry the owners, Stratford District Council, only allow us to run the ferry between 1st March and 31st October. It is currently safely stored for maintenance and restoration in our workshops... More

Pennies to use to use the chain ferry crossing the river close to the RSC theatre. Great fun and made getting to the Butterfly farm much easier than the long walk around. Recommended.

I've been using this ferry as a local for nearly 50 years.... It's just great as a local to ride along with visitors to the town who I'd like to think are also enjoying the ferry. A MUST for any visitor... It's never about the cost or the Grumpy old man... (If your lucky during the summer you might get... More

This is a great way to cross the river Avon from the park to the gardens leading to the RSC and back of course! The operators are all local and always happy to give advice and information about this wonderful town.

We used this ferry service just to get across the river. It is only 50p to get across and it is one of the last chain link ferry services left in operation within the uk.

Well worth experiencing, it's only 50p per person, takes a few minutes but a unique experience. Runs all day from either side of the river.

Hand wound platform to get you across the river Avon. It takes about 1 minute to cross so the £1 fee seems very excessive. However, as this is the only crossing for about 300 metres then £1 is worth it - and they know it.

Just a really fun experience, especially for little children, to cross the 20 meters on a tiny boat operated by hand crank (one of the only chain ferries left in England).
