Take a scenic ferry trip across the River Avon to the Waterside gardens by the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and recreation grounds. In operation since 1937, and fully rebuilt in 2010 by Avon Boating, 'Malvolio' as it is named has ferried thousands of passengers back and forth over the River Avon. As one of the last remaining hand wound chain ferries in the country you will get to see a unique angle of the river with views downriver to the Holy Trinity Church and upstream to the RST.

For 50p who could miss this?! Friendly 'captain' who let my daughter honk the horn... hop aboard for the shortest sail ever!

For just 50p each, we were transported across the River Avon by this fascinating old chain ferry. The regatta was in progress on the day of our visit and the ferryman had to be quite skilful in picking the right time between races in order to make the crossing. This trip was the highlight of our visit to Stratford.

What fun the ferry always is. Friendly, enjoyable, brief but cheap! Kids and older all love this little treat.

Waited patiently for the chain ferry to come across. The children loved it. Lots of wildlife on river. Nominal fee. The sun was shining and it was very enjoyable with lots of history being told by the Captain😉

Well worth 50p of anyone's money. 5 minutes of sitting back watching someone else do the work across the river. Lovely guy very polite and considerate.

50p per person for a short trip across the river may seem expensive, but it was worth it. The passenger chain ferry is a little bit of history and provides the opportunity to be out on the river along with all the other boats. It,of course, also enables a circular walk from the public car park to be completed.

Used chain ferry which is 77 years old to travel from one side of river to the other. Only takes a few minutes but got into conversation very quickly with lady sitting next to me. Stratford is the kind of place where everyone wants to share experiences and views.

We crossed to complete a circular walk, locals I imagine use it as a short cut to the Recreation Ground, but why not do it just to experience a little piece of history. Passage will only take a couple of minutes. Glance up and down river for the views and enjoy watching the friendly ferryman wind away to get you... More
