I received a surprise sixtieth birthday present from my wife to spend a day on the footplate at the Stephenson Railway Museum – North Shields. After reading the itinerary I couldn’t wait for the day to arrive and what a fantastic experience it turned out to be. On arrival Robin the workshop and engineering manager made me very welcome, introducing... More

the museum is small but have quite a few posters, picture, displays, visuals, locos and historical information to keep you interested for 45 minutes or so. The train trip only at weekends, ticket must be purchased, is short because it goes just for a couple of miles and back but it is an enjoyable half an hour. We have a... More

This small railway museum has just completed a project compiling an oral, photographic and artefact history of its very historic area from 1800 to 2014. The exhibition has posters, film shows, and interactive QR sites both inside and outside the museum, and displays on its trains.

Just had a family trip on the Santa special train and feeling thoroughly festive afterwards!! Its well organised and great value and because its not as commercialized as other Christmas special trains you get a far more personal experience!!

Took my 4 year old nephew today, was so excited all week, felt really let down nothing to keep him amused apart from a singer who managed 3 songs, a quick visit from Santa, went home with a very dissapointed 4 year old,

I was here today as part of a trip organised for my Guide's - I had 5 girls aged 11-12. Who were all very excited to see Santa. I feel the 'magical' aspect of the event was missing - the station was not decorated and while the carriages were decorated I feel they were a little sad and in desperate... More

I was given an early Christmas present by my partner of a footplate/driving experience with the Stephenson Railway Museum and what a brilliant day I had. From the moment I arrived I was made to feel extremely welcome by Robin the Engineering and workshops manager. I was introduced to the team, given a cup of tea, shown around the facilities... More

Free to get in and browse. Kids love it and learn something. For a small price you can have a ride with an old steam train for about 30 min.overall a good and cheap family day out.

Having a train crazy three year old, I'm well versed in all attractions involving trains. The Stephenson museum is only open on a weekend, and the diesel train ride only runs on a Sunday. During the Summer holidays the museum has a kids entertainer and other activities for smaller ones. Much more to do than through term time. There are... More

It's a really great day if the steam train is running, for a small fee you can ride down to percy main and back, the museum itself is small but interesting.
